DESCRIPTION Athletic trainers often find themselves in the middle of issues involving athletes and over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, performance enhancement substances, and social drugs. Any of these agents, from ibuprofen to cocaine, can have profound effects on an athlete. Whether to avert a mild allergic reaction, prevent a life-threatening drug interaction, or identify and address a substance abuse problem, an athletic trainer's knowledge and understanding of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics is vital. Because of the substantial information on this topic and its significance for athletic trainers, the PASS program offers two pharmacology courses. Pharmacology for Athletic Trainers: Therapeutic Medications addresses issues involving legitimate over-the-counter and prescription medications. Athletic trainers need to know how medications may affect a training program and which medications are banned from use during competition, and they should be able to answer many of the health and medical questions frequently asked by athletes.
