100 years of cycling is a long time, and few races have the history, grandeur and mythology of Paris-Roubaix. The single hardest one-day race in the world got tougher this year with 49.3 km of brutal cobblestone sections to navigate, from the first at Troisvilles after 100 km to the last just before the riders entered the Velodrome for the final sprint. The race starts under bright morning sunlight and cool temperatures, but the cycling gods soon make sure the 100th edition goes down as one of the best, as rain -- and plenty of it -- comes down on cue just before the Forest of Arenberg, turning the race into one of most exciting and muddiest tests in its long history. This is a great race, which showcases an ever-expanding battle between Classics King Johan Museeuw and George Hincapie. As the wind, rain and slippery pave takes its toll, only Hincapie and USPS teammate Tom Boonen, Lars Michaelsen (Coast), Steffen Wesemann (Telekom), TristenHoffman (CSC), Max Van Heeswijk (Domo), Hans DeClercq (Lotto), and Nico Mattan (Cofidis) survive the constant attacks and race-altering crashes... With 40 km remaining, strongman Museeuw puts the hammer down while Hincapie is back four positions and is unable to respond fast enough. Museeuw pulls away on the group and never looks back. Coming into a muddy cobbled turn, Michaelsen falls and only Boonen and Hincapie escape as the group remounts. It's now a flat-out drag race for the Postal boys, who could end up second and third. But it wasn't to be! Hincapie, slowed by a service car, crashes cartwheel style into a ditch (one of the most spectacular crashes ever!). Walking out of the ditch covered in mud, water and perhaps a little manure, he remounts for the chase. Boonen is riding the ride of his life as Hincapie suffers due to lack of food and energy. Wesemann, the German, blows past him and catches Boonen, taking second in the final sprint. Hincapie finishes sixth and is depressed by the turn of events, but that's Roubaix, and that's why they call it the Hell of the North! SKU: VA-RD162DVD
