Because of its bitter taste and ability to stimulate digestion, usnea was historically used to treat indigestion. Many species of usnea are used medicinally, including U. hirta, U. barbata, U. florida, U. longissima and U. dasypoga. The herb's use dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece and China where it was called Sun-lo and was used to cool an overheated system and treat surface infections. The Formulary of Al-kindi, circa A.D. 850, even documents the use of usnea. Usnea contains mucilage which is helpful in easing irritating coughs. It is also used to treat colds, sore throats, and infections. This lichen has also been tested for use as an antibiotic and in test tube studies have suggested anti-cancer activity for usnic acid, but at this time the results do not warrant further investigation in humans. Usnic acid gives usnea its bitter taste and also acts as an antibiotic. It is used in treating colds, flu, and bronchitis. Usnea is good for respiratory, urinary tract, sinus, and lung infections including staphylococcus and streptococcus and pneumonococcus. It is an anti-fungal useful in treating athlete's foot, vaginal infections and candida. There are no known side effects or drug interactions with Usnea and it is considered safe for use in children; however, the safety of Usnea during pregnancy and nursing is not known. King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Black pepper is a gastro-intestinal stimulant, and is much used as a condiment to improve the flavor of food, and to favor its digestion by stimulating the stomach. It has been advantageously used as a carminative to remove flatulency, and to correct the nauseating or griping quality of other drugs, and is sometimes added to quinine in cases where the stomach, from torpidity or other cause, is not acted upon by the quinine alone. 'As a gastric stimulant it is very valuable in congestive chill, cholera morbus, and associated with hydrastis, nux vomica, or other stomachic bitters is effectual in atonic dyspepsia. Ground from 4 year old roots. Many Native American tribes used American ginseng, Panax quinquefolium. Medicinal uses ranged from digestive disorders to sexual problems. The Chinese began to use American ginseng after it was imported during the 1700s. The traditional applications in China are somewhat different from those for Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng), American ginseng being considered a better stomachic.
