Zinc is an essential trace mineral. Every cell in the body needs this nutrient and hundreds of body processes rely on it, from the immune system and the enzymes that produce DNA to the senses of taste and smell. Usnea Lichen Extract (Usnea barbata) 2 fl oz: HH

Traditional uses of usnea include dusting the powdered herb directly onto open or infected wounds, making strong decoctions, and tincturing the herb in alcohol. The salve form is also effective. Usnic acid is poorly water soluble, so ethyl alcohol is used to produce a tincture. A 1:3 dilution in 70 percentalcohol is standard, and the adult dose is 3 ml three times daily, or more in acute cases. Usnea, also known as old man’s beard, is not a plant but a lichen—a symbiotic relationship (a combination of two organisms which live together intimately) between an algae and a fungus. Usnea looks like long, fuzzy strings hanging from trees in the forests of North America and Europe, where it grows. Because of its bitter taste and ability to stimulate digestion, usnea was historically used to treat indigestion. Many species of usnea are used medicinally, including U. hirta, U. barbata, U. florida, U. longissima and U. dasypoga. The herb's use dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece and China where it was called Sun-lo and was used to cool an overheated system and treat surface infections. The Formulary of Al-kindi, circa A.D. 850, even documents the use of usnea. Usnea contains mucilage which is helpful in easing irritating coughs. It is also used to treat colds, sore throats, and infections. This lichen has also been tested for use as an antibiotic and in test tube studies have suggested anti-cancer activity for usnic acid, but at this time the results do not warrant further investigation in humans. Usnic acid gives usnea its bitter taste and also acts as an antibiotic. It is used in treating colds, flu, and bronchitis. Usnea is good for respiratory, urinary tract, sinus, and lung infections including staphylococcus and streptococcus and pneumonococcus. It is an anti-fungal useful in treating athlete's foot, vaginal infections and candida. There are no known side effects or drug interactions with Usnea and it is considered safe for use in children; however, the safety of Usnea during pregnancy and nursing is not known.

This appears to 'jump start' the body’s own natural production of Glucosamine. Combining Glucosamine with chondroitin sulfate has been demonstrated to increase its effectiveness. Glucosamine has been used to treat osteoarthritis in Europe since the 1980s. Several recent scientific studies have supported its effectiveness, and its popularity in the U.S. is spreading quickly. In November 1999, a Belgian group of researchers presented a study to the American College of Rheumatology showing that glucosamine may slow the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee. At a recent symposium of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the official 'green light' was given to glucosamine as a valid therapeutic alternative when NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen are ineffective or contraindicated. Other clinicians at the symposium suggested that glucosamine could be recommended as first-line therapy in selected patients with osteoarthritis. Glucosamine, in either the sulfate, HCL, or acetylated forms, is so safe that it is a dietary supplement not even subject to FDA approval.
