This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed, doublewall silver foil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction and tincture. Guaranine (which is nearly identical to caffeine) and the closely related alkaloids theobromine and theophylline, make up the primary active agents in guaraná. Caffeine's effects (and hence those of guaranine) are well known and include stimulating the central nervous system, increasing metabolic rate, and having a mild diuretic effect. The indigenous people of the Amazon rain forest used crushed guaraná seed as a beverage and a medicine. Guaraná was said to treat diarrhea, decrease fatigue, reduce hunger, and to help arthritis. It also has a history of use in treating hangovers from alcohol abuse and headaches related to menstruation. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Nervine, tonic, slightly narcotic stimulant, aphrodisiac febrifuge. A beverage is made from the guaran sticks, by grating half a tablespoonful into sugar and water and drinking it like tea. The Brazilian miners drink this constantly and believe it to be a preventive of many diseases, as well as a most refreshing beverage. Their habit in travelling is to carry the stick or a lump of it in their pockets, with a palate bone or scale of a large fish with which to grate it. P. Cupana is also a favourite national diet drink, the seeds are mixed with Cassava and water, and left to ferment until almost putrid, and in this state it is the favourite drink of the Orinoco Indians. From the tannin it contains it is useful for mild forms of leucorrhoea, diarrhoea, etc., but its chief use in Europe and America is for headache, especially if of a rheumatic nature.' 'It is a gentle excitant and serviceable where the brain is irritated or depressed by mental exertion, or where there is fatigue or exhaustion from hot weather. It has the same chemical composition as caffeine, theine and cocaine, and the same physiological action. Its benefit is for nervous headache or the distress that accompanies menstruation, or exhaustion following dissipation. It is not recommended for chronic headache or in cases where it is not desirable to increase the temperature, or excite the heart or increase arterial tension.' 'Dosage: Powder, 10 grains to 1/2 drachm. Fluid extract of Guarana, U.S.P., 30 minims sweetened with one teaspoonful of syrup in water three times a day.' The herb is used as an infusion and tincture. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The part of the plant now employed is the minute spores which, as a yellow powder, are shaken out of the kidney-shaped capsules or sporangia growing on the inner side of the bracts covering the fruit spike.' 'Under the names of Muscus terrestris or M. clavatum the whole plant was used, dried, by ancient physicians as a stomachic and diuretic, mainly in calculous and other kidney complaints; the spores do not appear to have been used alone until the seventeenth century, when they were employed as a diuretic in dropsy, a drastic in diarrhoea, dysentery and suppression of urine, a nervine in spasms and hydrophobia, an aperient in gout and scurvy and a corroborant in rheumatism, and also as an application to wounds. They were, however, more used on the Continent than in this country and never had a place in the London Pharmacopoeia, though they have been prescribed for irritability of the bladder, in the form of a tincture, which is official in the United States Pharmacopoeia.' 'The spores are still medicinally employed by herbalists in this country, both internally and externally, as a dusting powder in various skin diseases such as eczema and erysipelas and for excoriated surfaces, to prevent chafing in infants. Smudge Sticks or Smudge Bundles are all-natural ceremonial incense traditionally burned in Native American rituals such as sweat lodges. Increasingly, doctors, therapists, and body workers are discovering the beneficial aspects of these herbs. The white foliage has awonderful aroma and is used for incense. White sage is primarily used as an incense, and is burned to give a general sense of well-being as well as to drive away specific ailments. It has traditionally been used as a relaxant. Lactuca altissima, also called Lactuca quercina, is not, strictly speaking, Lactuca virosa, although the two plants are so closely related they have often been mistaken for one another by the herbal authorities over the years (http://www.inra.fr/flore-france/la-ld.htm). The sesquiterpene lactones from Lactuca altissima are chemically identical to those from Lactuca virosa. As Grieve puts it, 'All lettuces possess some of this narcotic juice, Lactuca virosa having the most, and the others in the following order: L. scariola, or Prickly Lettuce, L. altissima, L. Canadensis, or Wild Lettuce of America, and L. sativa, or Garden Lettuce.' As King's puts it, 'The most energetic lactucarium is said to be obtained from L. virosa and L. altissima.' Wild lettuce is called 'Lettuce Opium' not in the politicized modern sense, but in the medicinal 19th century way, meaning that it is a valuable nervine, anodyne, hypnotic and anti-spasmodic, useful for restlessness, sleeplessness, and hysteria in children. Sweet Marjoram is an Old World perennial aromatic herb of the mint family, cultivated in gardens for flavoring of various kinds of recipes. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Native Americans also use Sheep Sorrel leaves as a tasty seasoning for meat dishes and baked it into their breads. A common summertime sight in the North American wild, Sorrel was used as a salad green. Mashed Sorrel leaves mixed with vinegar and sugar were popular as a greensauce with cold meat. The sharp taste, due to its oxalic acid and vitamin C content, led this herb to be used in folk medicine, mainly as a tea or decoction. Sorrel acts as a diuretic, antiscorbutic, and refrigerant. It is good for treating urinary problems. The herb relieves internal ulcers and, when applied externally, helps clear skin problems such as herpes, eczema and ringworm. Sheep Sorrel also contains silicon which aids the nervous system. Carotenoids, a component of Sheep Sorrel, are present at a concentration of approximately 8-12%. Betacarotene (a strong antioxidant member of the carotenoids) is converted to Vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A has been shown to strengthen the immune system by aiding production of white blood cells. White blood cells are what attack many of the body's harmful intruders, including cancer.
