It has a slight smoky odour and the taste is unpleasant, followed by pungent acridity. It has strong cathartic and purgative action,and is used in constipation, pain and colic in the bowels and general intestinal torpor, being combined, in compound powder, with other laxatives, and with carminatives such as ginger, cloves, etc. It accelerates the action of rhubarb. Jalap forms a safe purge for children, being given in sugar or jam to disguise the taste, and has been used thus with calomel or wormwood as a vermifuge. It proves an excellent purge in rheumatism. Preparations: Powdered root, 3 to 20 grains. Tincture, B.P., 1/2 to 1 drachm. Powdered resin, 2 to 5 grains. Compound powder, B.P., 1 to 2 drachms. Jalapin, 1 to 3 grains. King's American Dispensatory, 1898: Jalap is an irritant and cathartic, operating energetically, occasioning profuse liquid stools with griping, and sometimes sickness at stomach, or even vomiting. Large doses produce violent hypercatharsis, sometimes terminating fatally. When applied to a wound, it is said to induce purgation. Notwithstanding its activity, it is a safe and convenient purgative, much in use among the profession, and is useful in all cases where it is desirable to produce an energetic influence on the bowels, or to obtain large evacuations. In intestinal inflammations it should not be used. When the rectum is impacted with a hard, fecal mass, the expulsion of the latter is facilitated by the purgative action of jalap, which greatly augments the intestinal secretions; all cases of constipation, due to dryness of the mucous membranes, through inactivity of the intestinal glands, are relieved by jalap. The dose for this latter purpose may be 5 grains in the morning, repeated for several days. When a stimulating laxative can not be used in hemorrhoids, jalap may be employed, and it is likewise efficient as a derivative in cerebral disorders. The tendency of jalap to gripe and nauseate, may be obviated by adding to the dose 1 or 2 grains of camphor, or 3 grains of cloves. The dose of powdered jalap is from 10 to 30 grains (the aqueous extract ought not to be used, except as a diuretic); of the tincture, from 1 to 4 fluid drachms; the resin, or alcoholic extract, is given in from 2 to 8-grain doses, being usually rubbed up with sugar, or in emulsion, for the purpose of lessening its disposition to produce painful irritation of the intestinal mucous membrane. Specific Indications and Uses.—Constipation from deficient secretion of intestinal glands; pain and griping in lower bowel; colic, with stercoraceous vomiting; general gastro-intestinal torpor. According to test tube experiments, the polysaccharides and proteins in wild indigo are believed to stimulate the immune system. This might account for its role against the common cold and flu. Wild Indigo is useful in the treatment of infections and catarrh in the ear, nose and throat. It may be used for laryngitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis and catarrhal infections of the nose and sinus. Taken both internally and as a mouthwash it will heal mouth ulcers, gingivitis and help in the control of pyorrhea. Systematically it may be helpful in the treatment of enlarged and inflamed lymph glands (lymphadenitis) and also to reduce fevers. Externally an ointment will help infected ulcers and ease sore nipples. A douche of the decoction will help leucorrhoea. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': The root is non-odorous and of a nauseous acrid taste, containing gum, albumen, starch, a yellowish resin and a crystalline substance. Medicinal Action and Uses: Used internally in form of decoction or syrup in scarlatina, typhus, and inall cases where there is a tendency to putrescency; it is purgative, emetic, stimulant, astringent, and antiseptic, principally used for its antiseptic qualities. Dosage: Of the decoction, 1 tablespoonful. Fluid extract, 1/4 to 1/2 drachm. Baptisin, 1 to 3 grains. King's American Dispensatory, 1898: To the taste baptisia is somewhat bitter, subacrid, and subastringent. It increases the secretions of the glandular apparatus of the gastro-intestinal tract. Large doses are dangerous, acting as an emeto-cathartic. Small doses act as a laxative. Baptisia is an active and efficient hepatic, stimulating the liver and causing an increased biliary secretion. It loses much of its activity when dried or boiled. It is asserted that baptitoxine increases the respiratory movements, and in toxic doses kills by asphyxiation through paralysis of the respiratory centers. Baptisia was first employed as a dressing for all kinds of ulcerations, malignant ulcers, sore mouth, mercurial or otherwise, especially when accompanied by foul breath, loss of appetite, and general gastric disturbance. Sore nipples, erysipelatous, scrofulous, and syphilitic ulcers were treated with a decoction of wild indigo. The greater the tendency to mortification, the more highly the remedy was valued. It controls irritable and painful ulcers, lessens their foul discharges, and overcomes putrescency. Baptisia is of marked value in many forms of malignant sore throat. While the infusion is undoubtedly the best preparation of baptisia, it can not always be employed, for the dried plant is almost worthless, and the fresh herb not always easily procured. We depend upon specific baptisia, giving it internally in small doses, and applying it locally, diluted with water. 250 watt 120 volt HPS System with Sylvania Lamp and 36'' Parabolic Reflector: HY
250 watt 120 Volt High Pressure Sodium system with Standard Grade Sylvania lamp and 36 inch vertical parabolic reflector. This 3-foot wide vertical parabolic reflector system is a real value. The reflector is made from nine individual pieces of lightweight aluminum, powder-coated white on one side and natural aluminum on the other. When screwed together the two pieces make up the familiar Umbrella shape that has been a standard in the industry for years. The cone shaped reflector allows for a wide reflection of light to the plants and good downward reflection. The lamp that comes with this system is a Standard Grade Sylvania lamp suitable for enhanced bloom growth. The ballast utilizes a high tech heat sink, which doubles as the component enclosure housing. It is ETL listed for safe operation, rated for damp location, comes with a 6-foot power cord and has a 15-foot lamp cord. High Pressure Sodium lamps are used in greenhouses to elevate the red, orange and yellow electromagnetic wavelengths hitting the plant. This (along with shorter photo-periods) signals the plant to start producing bloom hormones. Increased red, orange and yellow wavelengths can produce higher yields and more abundant blooms and fruiting sites when quality plant foods and bloom leaf sprays are used. Look to Vita Grow Thunder Bloom Foliar Spray to increase fruiting sites by at least 20 percent and up to 100 percent when compared to a control group. Indoor gardeners, lacking the Sun, may find that Hps lamps do not supply the necessaryamount of blue light to keep plants healthy. Blue light drives photosynthesis, translocates sugars and keeps the immune system working properly. Those growing areas using HPS lamps exclusively in the bloom stages of growth may experience adverse vertical stretching and blooms located only at the top of the plant. It is suggested to burn a Metal Halide lamp along side of the HPS lamp to increase sugar production and horizontal growth. Increased insect attack in the final stages of HPS only bloom growth may also be experienced. Other options would include using Sunmaster Warm Metal Halide lamps that burn at the 3 thousand Kelvin color temperature range.
