This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion, decoction, tincture, ointment and preserve. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Elder flower for 'Colds.' 'Average daily dosage: 10 - 15 g drug; 1.5 - 3 g fluidextract (according to Erg. B. 6); 2.5 - 7.5 g tincture (according to Erg. B. 6); equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Whole herb and other galenical preparations for teas, 1 - 2 cups of tea sipped several times daily, as hot as possible. Actions: Diaphoretic; Increased bronchial secretion.' Elder soothes coughs and inflammation by increasing bronchial secretions. It also noticeably increases sweating. Both the flowers and the berries are diaphoretic, anti-catarrhal and anti-spasmodic. Flavonoid-rich Elder, berries and flowers, are cell-protective and antioxidant. Elder leaves, have been shown to be antiviral, inhibiting such as flu and herpes viruses. Elder syrup has been shown to lessen flu symptoms and speed recovery. Elder flowers have been shown to be anti-inflammatory. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Elder Flowers and Elder Berries have long been used in the English countryside for making many home-made drinks and preserves that are almost as great favourites now as in the time of our great-grandmothers. The berries make an excellent home-made wine and winter cordial, which improves with age, and taken hot with sugar, just before going to bed, is an old-fashioned and well established cure for a cold.' The Bags measure 4'' wide, 3'' deep, and 18'' tall and contains approximately one pound of sterilized substrate. To use, simply unfold the Bag, allowing the extra material to stand straight up. Locate the small foam disk sealed and attached in a plastic housing near the base of the Bag. This disc is the self-healing injector site. Note: The disc will be covered by a small plastic shield. Do not attempt to remove the plastic covering the disc, you will inject through it. Galangal Root Powder (Alpinia galanga) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. A rhizome with a hot peppery flavor, galangal is used primarily as a seasoning. Greater galangal is also called Laos ginger, Siamese ginger and Thai ginger. It grows throughout Southeast Asia and is particularly popular in Thai cooking. This creamy white-fleshed rhizome is often used as a substitute for ginger. Chinese five spice powder is sometimes enhanced with galangal. Thai Lemon Grass, Galangal & Shrimp Soup: From: 'Simply Thai Cooking' Wandee Young and Byron Ayanoglu 4 cups water 1 stick lemon grass4 lime leaves (or 2 tablespoons lime juice) 1 inch galangal root (or ginger root) 2 fresh hot chilies 3 tablespoons fish sauce 1 teaspoon sugar 1 ½ teaspoons chili paste 2 ounces button mushrooms, quartered 16 large shrimps, shelled and deveined (10 oz) 3 tablespoons lime juice Fresh coriander leaves 1. Heat 4 cups water in a soup pot to boiling. 2. Smash lemon grass with the flat of a chef's knife once, and then cut into 1-inch pieces; tear lime leaves into thirds; and slice galangal into thin rounds. Reserve these ingredients together. 3. Crush the fresh chilies and cut in half. Reserve separately. 4. When water has boiled, add the reserved lemon grass/galangal/lime leaves. Boil for 1 minute. Add fish sauce, sugar and chili paste. Boil for another 2 minutes. Add mushrooms and boil for 2 minutes. Add shrimps and lime juice (3 tablespoons plus the other 2 tablespoons if you haven't used the lime leaves) and lower heat to medium-high. Cook for 2 minutes, just until the shrimps have turned white and springy. Transfer to a soup tureen, decorate with fresh coriander leaves and serve immediately. Quick and easy, this soup depends on its aromatics for its ethereal allure. The barely poached (definitely undercooked) shrimps, however are what make it a treat. A note about this and other soups: lemon grass, galangal root and lime leaves, the trio of flavors that give many Thai soups their distinctive taste are unchewable, but form dictates that they be left in the soup. It is then up to the soup slurpers to avoid eating them. Medicinally Galangal is often served as a tea or decoction. Leading herbalists say that osha root tea, or a stronger thick boiled decoction, can be used like echinacea for the treatment of respiratory infections such as colds, flu, sore throat, and typical upper respiratory congestion. Osha root contains various properties which make it both antibacterial and antiviral, therefore useful for a wide variety of infections including herpes, sore throats, colds, flu, and as a bronchial expectorant. Osha contains a volatile oil as well as an alkaloid, sterols, and saponins. Where relaxation of the system is required, as, for instance, to subdue spasm, Lobeliais invaluable. Relaxation can be counteracted by the stimulating and tonic infusion of capsicum. It may be used as an enema.' 'Externally, an infusion has been found useful in ophthalmia, and the tincture can be used as a local application for sprains, bruises, or skin diseases, alone, or in powder combined with an equal part of slippery elm bark and weak lye-water in a poultice. Nutmeg oil is distilled from whole, dried nutmegs that have been cut into small particles and pressed to remove the fixed oil, also known as nutmeg butter. The oil has the characteristic aromatic, volatile, oily-spicy fragrance of whole nutmegs. Nutmeg oil is a component in men's fragrances and spicy perfumes. Aromatherapy benefits: rejuvenating, uplifting, energizing. Fragrant and tasty nutmeg is essential in any number of recipes. What would eggnog be without the nutmeg? It is mildly hallucinogenic, which may also contribute to the Christmas cheer. Nutmeg is also used in perfumes and ointments. The brown, wrinkled, apricot-like fruit contains a kernel which is covered by a bright red membrane. The membrane (arillus) provides the spice mace, and the kernel the spice nutmeg.
