It's made by pulverizing the ground, dried residueof corn grains after preparatory soaking and the removal of the embryo and the outer covering. It’s also a great body talc – far superior to mineral talcum powders. The American Cancer Society and National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, among others, are recommending that women use cornstarch powders, rather than talcum powders, in the genital area. 'Talcum Powder and Cancer' from the ACS states: 'Until additional information is available, women may wish to consider avoiding these products or substituting cornstarch-based powders that contain no talc.' Phoenix Fir Oyster Plug Spawn: 100 dowels (Pleurotus pulmonarius): F
This member of the Tree Oyster family thrives on conifer stumps and logs, especially spruces and fir.Mycelium is whitish in color, producing white-beige mushrooms. Fungi Perfecti's Plug Spawn consists of mushroom mycelium growing on small, spiral-grooved birch dowels. By using the dowels to inoculate cut hardwood logs or stumps, mushroom mycelium can be encouraged to grow throughout or colonize the wood. Once the wood is fully colonized (typically 9-12 months) mushrooms will spring forth from cracks or channels in the wood. Fungi Perfecti's Plug Spawn comes with a 10-page instruction booklet. Generally, the best time of year to inoculate logs and stumps is in the Spring, after your last hard frost. However, you can inoculate your logs any time up to 2-3 weeks before consistently (i.e. 'round the clock) freezing temperatures set in for the Winter. The idea is to allow the mushroom mycelium growing on the Plug Spawn time to establish itself in its new home before it goes into dormancy over the Winter. Logs should be cut to lengths of 3-4 feet, and are best if they do not exceed 14 inches in diameter. Use a 5/16'' drill bit in a high-speed drill to drill 2-inch holes no more than 4 inches apart, evenly spaced along the logs. Stumps should be inoculated along the circumference of their face, in the border between the bark and the heartwood. Insert 1 plug per hole and whack it in with a hammer. A 3-4 foot log can take 50 or more plugs, while stumps usually hold 30-50 plugs Holes can be sealed with cheese wax or beeswax to protect the mycelium while it is growing; although this step can be helpful, it is not absolutely necessary. Our Plug Spawn prefers to grow on hardwoods, with the exception of the Conifer Coral Mushroom, which grows on conifers, and the Phoenix Oyster, which grows well on firs. Most species can be grown on either logs or stumps. Non-aromatic hardwoods such as oak, poplar (cottonwood), elm, maple and similar woods are very good candidates for log cultivation. Alder is a good wood for the cultivation of Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms, but must be kept above ground because it will decompose quickly in contact with the soil. (We do not recommend using aromatic woods such as cedar or eucalyptus.) Thick-barked woods are preferable over ''paper-bark'' woods such as birch, and any log that is shedding it's bark should not be used. Logs should be cut one to three months in advance of plugging. Cutting your logs in the late Winter or early Spring helps to insure that they have a high sugar content, although this is not strictly necessary. Freshly-cut logs should not be immediately inoculated; trees naturally produce anti-fungal compounds, which degrade in two to three weeks from cutting. Aged deadwood is also not recommended for plugging, as it has a poor nutrient base for supporting mushroom growth. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Eucalyptus leaf for 'Catarrhs of the respiratory tract.' The medicinal properties of Eucalyptus reside in its oil, which is extracted from the fresh leaves and branch tips, and is found in the dried leaves. It acts as a decongestant, loosens phlegm, and relieves spasms. Eucalyptus leaves are therefore useful, as a tea or decoction, for bronchitis, cough and colds. Eucalyptus has been shown to be powerfully bacteriocidal in the laboratory. Like the similar soothing agents menthol and camphor, Eucalyptus is found in several familiar over-the-counter remedies, including Listerine Antiseptic Mouthrinse, Mentholatum Cherry Chest Rub, and Vicks VapoRub. Citrus aurantium is an evergreen tree with hardy branches and beautiful white flowers. It is a tree from which four essential oils are produced: Neroli, from the flowers; Petitgrain, from the leaves; Bitter Orange, from the rind; an oil from the juice of the fruit (used in food flavoring only). A valuable medicinal herb, the orange originated in China, and by the Middle Ages was a favorite with Arabian physicians. In the 16th century, an Italian princess named Anna-Marie de Nerola reputedly discovered an oil extracted from the flowers, which she used to scent her gloves; today neroli oil, as it became known, is expensive. Bitter Orange has a fresh, dry, almost floral aroma with a rich, sweet undertone It is antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, digestive febrifuge, sedative, stomachic, tonic. May help stomach ailments such as, nervousness, diarrhoea and constipation. Aids the absorption of vitamin C which could ward off viral infections. Appears to deal effectively with dry skin, wrinkles and dermatitis. The oil is used chiefly as a flavoring agent, but may be used in the same way as oil of turpentine in chronic bronchitis. It is non-irritant to the kidneys and pleasant to take. The powdered Bitter Orange peel should be dried over freshly-burnt lime. For flavoring, the sweet peel is better, and as a tonic, that of the Seville or Bigaradia is preferred. A syrup and an elixir are used for flavoring, and a wine as a vehicle for medicines. The compound wine is too dangerous as an intoxicant, being mixed with absinthium, to be recommended as a tonic. The essential oils of bitter orange, especially neroli, are sedative. In Western medicine, these oils are used to reduce heart rate and palpitations, to encourage sleep, and to soothe the digestive tract. Diluted neroli is applied as a relaxing massage oil. The distilled flower water is antispasmodic and sedative. Bitter orange peel contains a volatile oil with limonene (about 90%), flavonoids, coumarins, triterpenes, vitamin C, carotene, and pectin. The flavonoids have several useful properties, being anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal. The composition of the volatile oils in the leaves, flowers, and peel varies significantly. Linalyl acetate (50%) is the main constituent in oil from the leaves (petit grain), and linalool (35%) in oil from theflowers (neroli). The unripe fruit of the bitter orange contains cirantin, which reputedly is a contraceptive. For skin problems, the decoction is used both internally and externally. Burdock is also used as a skin ointment. The presence of high amounts of inulin and mucilage may explain Burdock’s soothing effects on the skin and gastrointestinal tract. As King's puts it: 'Skin diseases, depending upon a depraved state of the cutaneous tissues and less upon the state of the blood itself, are conditions in which lappa has gained a reputation. It has been particularly praised in psoriasis, its use being long-continued to produce good results.'
