The leaves, flowers, and buds are employed, and their properties may be regarded as stimulant, lenitive, tonic, and nervine. The infusion is generally preferred, and may be given to allay irritation and restlessness, and to promote rest and sleep. The hot infusion is employed to check diarrhoea from cold, and in the various forms of colds and catarrhal conditions, while, either hot or cold, it may be used in restlessness, nervous headaches, painful and difficult digestion, and mild hysteria. The effects upon the nervous system are sometimes obtained by an enema, or bath, prepared from the flowers. The infusion is prepared from 30 or 40 grains of the flowers and 1 pint of water. Xanthones isolated from the plant given orally or intraperitonially have been shown to exhibit significant anti-inflammatory activity in normal as well as adrenolectomised rats. The Ethanolic extract of the plant showed diuretic and hypotensive activity. Volatile oil from the flowers showed antibacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic activities1. A shallow stream of nutrient solution runs along the bottom of the tray nourishing and hydrating the root systems. The lower roots are feeding while the upper roots take in oxygen. The root system eventually will form one continuous large mat along the bottom of the channel. End caps, end caps with spouts, and joiners are available to make the AERODUCT™ channel the most flexible multi-task grow channel available. Aeroponics The AERODUCT™ can also be used in aeroponic applications. Just reverse the lid opposite from the NFT applications allowing the net pots to sit higher in the channel. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. Buchu grows mainly in the Cedarberg mountains of South Africa. Hottentots traditionally use the fragrant leaves, which are delicious in tea, as a perfume, by rubbing it on their bodies. They also made a Buchu brandy by distilling the leaves with wine and used a strong decoction to wash wounds. Buchu is aromatic, antiseptic, carminative and diaphoretic, of use especially for urinary tract disorders. The herb's diuretic activity is thought to be due to the presence of the volatile oil diosphenol, which may also be antibacterial. There is occasional gastrointestinal intolerance to Barosma so it should not be taken on an empty stomach. It is contraindicated during pregnancy. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'In gravel, inflammation and catarrh of the bladder it is specially useful. The infusion (B.P.) of 1 oz. of leaves to 1 pint of boiling water is taken in wineglassful doses three or four times a day.' Other Preparations: Fluid extract: dose, ½ to 1 drachm. Tincture, B.P.: dose, ½ to 1 drachm. Solid extract: dose, 5 to 15 grains. Barosmin: dose, 2 to 3 grains.' 'Buchu has long been known at the Cape as a stimulant tonic and remedy for stomachic troubles, where it is infused in Brandy and known as Buchu Brandy. Its use was learnt from the Hottentots.'
