Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. The genus Capsicum comprises all the varied forms of fleshy-fruited peppers grown as herbaceous annuals--the red, green, and yellow peppers rich in vitamins A and C that are usedin seasoning and as a vegetable food. The African birdseye chile is both wild and domesticated and is also known in English as African devil chile, in Swahili as piri-piri and in Kamba as ndul. It should be pointed out that piri-piri simply means 'pepper-pepper' and is a generic term for any African chile. Most sources state that the birdseye is Capsicum frutescens, making it a relative of the tabasco chile. The Heat Level of Pepper is measured on the Scoville scale in 'Heat Units'. Two common ground varieties are 30M & 90M Heat Units, (30,000 & 90,000 respectively). The 30M pepper is comparable to the canned 'Red Pepper' that you find in at the Supermarket. Just about anyone can tolerate 30m (also called 30k) Cayenne. On the other hand, 90m Cayenne is incredibly hot. Incredibly delicious, but incredibly hot. So watchit. Capsicum varieties are so closely related - and their culinary uses identical - that it takes an expert to distinguish one from the other. Calamus Root Powder (Acorus calamus; Vacha) 8 oz: B
This herb has traditionally been smoked, eaten, or brewed into a tea or decoction. According to Ayurvedic tradition, Vacha is a 'sattvic' herb which feeds and transmutes the sexual 'kundalini' energy. Calamus has been called called 'the closest thing to Viagra that nature has to offer.' It is a stimulating nervine antispasmodic, and a general tonic to the mind. As a rejuvenative for the brain and nervous system, it is used to promote cerebral circulation, to stimulate self-expression, and to help manage a wide range of symptoms in the head, including neuralgia, epilepsy, memory loss and shock. In many cases involving the sinuses or shock, the powdered root is taken nasally. The Cree say that they can take Calamus root and 'travel great distances without touching the ground'. Active constituents: Monoterpene hydrocarbons, sequestrine ketones, (trans- or Alpha) Asarone (2,4,5-trimethoxy-1-propenylbenzene), and Beta-asarone (cis- isomer) contained in the roots essential oils. It is used in the Phillipines for rheumatism and memory problems. In Korea, it is an ingredient in a type of moonshine called Immortals' Booze. Research in China has shown the essential oil in this rhizome to be sedating and neuroprotectant. Sweet flag has been used in Asia for at least the last 2000 years for a number of beneficial reasons. The ancient Chinese used it to lessen swelling and for constipation. In India, Ayurvedic medicinal practice has used the magical root to cure fevers, for asthma and bronchitis, and as an all around sedative. The root was also used by the ancient Greeks and included in the traditional remedies of many other European cultures. During the middle ages calamus was an admixture in several of the ancient, psychoactive, 'witches flying ointments', often being mixed with solanacious herbs. The root was also well-known in Biblical times and mentioned in Exodus 30: 22-25 as one of the ingredients of the 'holy anointing oil'. The Cree Indians of Northern Alberta use calamus for a number of medicinal reasons including: as an analgesic for the relief of toothache or headache, for oral hygiene to cleanse and disinfect the teeth, the fight the effects of exhaustion or fatigue, and to help cure/prevent a hangover. Other Native tribes used it to treat a cough, made a decoction as a carminative and as an infusion for cholic. The Sioux used the whole plant, making aromatic garlands from the leaves and using the root as a tea for bowel pains, or rubbed the chewed root on the skin for a general illness cure. Calamus was also known to many early American settlers and used for a number of folk remedies. Walt Whitman even wrote poetry about his beloved herb in 'Leaves of Grass'. Calamus was also widely used by Canadian trappers working for the Hudson Bay Company, using it as a stimulant, chewing a small piecewhenever tired. Green tea is, instead, steamed, rolled and fired. Green tea is the natural dried leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Black tea is oxidized green tea. Green tea is not graded similar to black tea but classified according to age, style of the leaf and manufacture, e.g., Gunpowder, Pan-fired, Young Hysson, Bancha, etc. Since green tea, unlike black and oolong tea, is not fermented, the active constituents remain unaltered in the herb. Green tea is bioflavonoid-rich, proven useful for fighting free radical damage in the human body. It has a high content of polyphenols, which are a class of bioflavonoids. Green tea's best studied polyphenol is Epigallocatechin Gallate. EpigallocatechinGallate (EGCG), protects against digestive and respiratory infections. A solution of 1 mcg per ml of EGCG heavily inhibited influenza virus in vitro. Green tea is beneficial in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease as it exerts antioxidant activity, lowers cholesterol and reduces platelet aggregation (stickiness). Green tea extract is very good for the arteries and heart. Additional studies have demonstrated enhanced liver function and immune system function secondary to these polyphenols. Tea contains only four calories per cup when consumed without added ingredients but is a source of several B-complex vitamins, including B2 and nicotinic acid. Caffeine is responsible for tea's stimulating effect. Flavour is produced by volatile oils, and astringency and colour by tannin. Teas are classified according to region of origin, as in China, Ceylon, Japanese, Indonesian, and African tea, or by smaller district, as in Darjeeling, Assam, and Nilgris from India, Uva and Dimbula from Sri Lanka, Keemun from Chi-men in China's Anhwei Province, and Enshu from Japan. Teas are also classified by the size of the processed leaf. Traditional operations result in larger leafy grades and smaller broken grades. The leafy grades are flowery pekoe (FP), orange pekoe (OP), pekoe (P), pekoe souchong (PS), and souchong (S). The calibration is now complete. OPERATION: • Remove the protective cap. • Turn the meter on by pressing the ON key. • Immerse the probe in the solution to be tested. • Stir gently and wait for the reading to stabilize. • After use, rinse the electrode with water to minimize contamination. • Always replace the protective cap after use. Note: if the reading is overrange, the display PROBE REPLACEMENT: The probe can be easily replaced in the following way: • Remove the protective cap. • Unscrew the plastic ring on the top of the probe. • Pull out the MA73075 (or MA73076) probe and replace it with a new one (aligning the colored pin towards the LCD side). • Make sure the gaskets are in place before screwing back the plastic ring. BATTERY REPLACEMENT: The meter is supplied with BEPS (Battery Error Preventing System) which avoids any erroneous reading due to low battery level, by switching the meter off. To replace the batteries unscrew the battery compartment cap and replace all three 1.5V batteries while paying attention to their polarity. Make sure the gasket is in place before screwing back the cap. Batteries shouldonly be replaced in a nonhazardous area using the battery type specified in this instruction manual. WARRANTY: These instruments are warranted from all defects in materials and manufacturing for a period of two years from the date of purchase. The probes are warranted for a period of one year.
