This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Also called Wormwood. Absinthe is traditionally used as a tea, a strong decoction, a smoke or as an alcoholic extract, a liquer. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends absinthe for 'Loss of appetite, dyspepsia, biliary dyskinesia. Daily dosage: 2 - 3 g of herb as water infusion. Mode of Administration: Cut herb for infusions and decoctions, herb powder, also extracts and tinctures as liquid or solid forms of medication for oral administration.' Yes, absinthe is an inebriating pipeful - its psychoactive thujones seem to bind to the same receptor as THC. Several species of Artemisia are also smoked for visionary effect by some Indian tribes. Edgar Allen Poe loved it, and lookit what he did. A user writes: 'The effect was extremely pleasant, although I would not list absinthe as a psychedelic. It definitely belongs in terms of subjective effects to the solvent/nitrous oxide category, although pharmacologically very different. The following day I felt very lethargic, but it is hard to say if it was due to the absinthe since we stayed up pretty late that night. My conclusion: I give it two thumbs up, but would not drink it more than occasionally since it is reported as neurotoxic.' Although the oil destroys various types of worms, long-term use, due to the mildly toxic thujones, is not recommended. Ordinary wormwood teas or tinctures, however, contain very little thujone, and are considered safe for short-term use. Wormwood is safe enough to be recommended by the German Commission E (see below). Also present in the plant are strong bitter agents known as absinthin and anabsinthin. These stimulate digestive function, including gall bladder function. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The chief constituent is a volatile oil, of which the herb yields in distillation from 0.5 to 1.0 per cent. It is usually dark green, or sometimes blue in colour, and has a strong odour and bitter, acrid taste. The oil contains thujone (absinthol or tenacetone), thujyl alcohol (both free and combined with acetic, isovalerianic, succine and malic acids), cadinene, phellandrene and pinene. The herb also contains the bitter glucoside absinthin, absinthic acid, together with tannin, resin, starch, nitrate of potash and other salts.' Medicinal Action and Uses: Tonic, stomachic, febrifuge, anthelmintic. 'A nervine tonic, particularly helpful against the falling sickness and for flatulence. It is a good remedy for enfeebled digestion and debility.' 'Preparations: Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm. The decoction was more effective in inhibiting stable toxin production as compared with labile toxin production. Indian Journal of Pharmacology 2001; 33: 392-393 ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF HOLARRHENA ANTIDYSENTERICA [KURCHI, KUTAJ] AGAINST THE ENTERIC PATHOGENS The present study was undertaken to find the antibacterial activity of the crude aqueous and alcoholic extracts of stem bark of Holarrhena antidysenterica against the known enteric pathogens. Holarrhena is a genus of trees or shrubs distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is a small deciduous tree with white flowers and found throughout the dry forests of India even as far as as Travancore1. The different parts of the plant were used since antiquity in the indegenous system of medicine. As far as our knowledge goes, antibacterial activity of H. antidysenterica against the enteric pathogens has not been reported from India . Considerable work has been carried out on the chemistry and biological activity of Kurchi which has been reviewed by several workers and is reported to have 29 different alkaloids in it. Amoebicidal, antituberculous and other antiprotozoal activity of individual alkaloids especially conessine have been extensively investigated4. Jain and Tarafder have mentioned the use of this plant by the various Indian tribals in cases of number of ailments like anemia, epilepsy, stomach pain and cholera. In Ayurveda, kurchi [kutaj] is used as antihelminthic, for diarrhoea and skin diseases. Portuguese had used it as a hot decoction in bowel infection5,6. The antibacterial activity of the stem bark of H. antidysenterica against the enteropathogens have not been documented so far in Indian literature. Our present work suggests that clinical trial of both aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the stem bark of H. antidysenterica can be carried out against a battery of enteric pathogens, casuative agents of diarrhoea in infants and adults. They are responsible for expanding the air bubbles that have been mixed, creamed, kneaded or whipped into the batter. This results in a delicious recipe, with lots of volume--only as long as there are adequate air bubbles. Leaveners also contribute to a baked goods' taste, coloring and texture. Baking powder is basically a blend of acid (most commonly calcium acid phosphate or cream of tartar) and baking soda (alkali - sodium bicarbonate), creating carbon dioxide bubbles when both moistened and heated. It is known as a double acting chemical leavener -- it begins release carbon dioxide as soon as it is moistened, and again when heated in the oven. (There are single acting baking powders, but are rarely used by home bakers). Always use double acting in recipes; it is virtually the only type available in grocery stores. Baking powder doesnot need an acidic ingredient to release its leavening power, as baking soda does, because it contains its own; baking powder contains 30 percent baking soda and monocalcium phosphate, both of which are an acid. What separates the AERODUCT™ from other grow channels on the market is our proprietary reversible tray lid with end caps and joiners. The AERODUCT™ is available with or without the lid. For NFT applications, the channel lid will sit lower in the tray so the net pot will sit flush on the bottom of the AERODUCT™ channel. A shallow stream of nutrient solution runs along the bottom of the tray nourishing and hydrating the root systems. The lower roots are feeding while the upper roots take in oxygen. The root system eventually will form one continuous large mat along the bottom of the channel.
