This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture and salve. Goldenseal is a broad spectrum antibiotic and fungicide, effective against a wide range of topical and internal infections of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. Its use by Native America was widespread. It was used topically for skin and eye infections, as a mouthwash for canker sores, and as a tea for diarrhea, upper respiratory and vaginal infections. It was also used as a yellow dye for skins and fabrics. The two primary alkaloids in goldenseal are hydrastine and berberine, along with smaller amounts of canadine. They have demonstrated antimicrobial effects against a wide range of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi, including Chlamydia species, E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Candida albicans and Entamoeba histolytica. Herbalists often recommend Goldenseal topically for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions, which make it useful to clean wounds, reduce hemorrhoids, soothe canker sores, and alleviate skin infections (including ringworm and athlete's foot). It can also help treat eye infections such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. The tea is recommended for colds. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The American aborigines valued the root highly as a tonic, stomachic and application for sore eyes and general ulceration, as well as a yellow dye for their clothing and weapons.' This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. This tea, honored since the 8th century Tang Dynasty, is one of the premier representatives of Chinese green teas, grown near the famed West Lake area on the Tieh Mu Mountain Range. This region of many lakes was said to once be home to several large, beautiful dragons. Dragonwell is hand-fired in large woks leaving the leaves flat, shiny, and a yellow jade color. There are many grades of Dragonwell tea. A clear, yellow-green infusion with anaromatic earthy flavor reminiscent of roasted chestnuts. Green tea should be steeped in very hot, but not boiling, water. Boiling water will scorch the delicate flavor, rendering it bitter. Green tea comes mainly from China, Japan, Taiwan and, to a lesser degree, India. The critical difference between green and black tea is that green tea leaves are not allowed to ferment. Green tea is, instead, steamed, rolled and fired. Green tea is the natural dried leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Black tea is oxidized green tea. The phrase 'Black Tea' is also used as a generic name for all Camelia sinensis teas. The major Black Tea types, from the traditional black tea evergeen (Camellia sinensis), classified according to processing method, include: fermented, or black, tea, producing an amber-coloured, full-flavoured beverage without bitterness; semi-fermented, or oolong, producing a slightly bitter, light brownish-green liquid; and unfermented, or green, tea, resulting in a mild, slightly bitter, pale greenish-yellow beverage. This herb has traditionally been smoked, eaten, or brewed into a tea or decoction. According to Ayurvedic tradition, Vacha is a 'sattvic' herb which feeds and transmutes the sexual 'kundalini' energy. Calamus has been called called 'the closest thing to Viagra that nature has to offer.' It is a stimulating nervine antispasmodic, and a general tonic to the mind. As a rejuvenative for the brain and nervous system, it is used to promote cerebral circulation, to stimulate self-expression, and to help manage a wide range of symptoms in the head, including neuralgia, epilepsy, memory loss and shock. In many cases involving the sinuses or shock, the powdered root is taken nasally. The Cree say that they can take Calamus root and 'travel great distances without touching the ground'. Active constituents: Monoterpene hydrocarbons, sequestrine ketones, (trans- or Alpha) Asarone (2,4,5-trimethoxy-1-propenylbenzene), and Beta-asarone (cis- isomer) contained in the roots essential oils. It is used in the Phillipines for rheumatism and memory problems. In Korea, it is an ingredient in a type of moonshine called Immortals' Booze. Research in China has shown the essential oil in this rhizome to be sedating and neuroprotectant. Sweet flag has been used in Asia for at least the last 2000 years for a number of beneficial reasons. The ancient Chinese used it to lessen swelling and for constipation. In India, Ayurvedic medicinal practice has used the magical root to cure fevers, for asthma and bronchitis, and as an all around sedative. The root was also used by the ancient Greeks and included in the traditional remedies of many other European cultures. During the middle ages calamus was an admixture in several of the ancient, psychoactive, 'witches flying ointments', often being mixed with solanacious herbs. The root was also well-known in Biblical times and mentioned in Exodus 30: 22-25 as one of the ingredients of the 'holy anointing oil'. The Cree Indians of Northern Alberta use calamus for a number of medicinal reasons including: as an analgesic for the relief of toothache or headache, for oral hygiene to cleanse and disinfect the teeth, the fight the effects of exhaustion or fatigue, and to help cure/prevent a hangover. Other Native tribes used it to treat a cough, made a decoction as a carminative and as an infusion for cholic. The Sioux used the whole plant, making aromatic garlands from the leaves and using the root as a tea for bowel pains, or rubbed the chewed root on the skin for a general illness cure. Calamus was also known to many early American settlers and used for a number of folk remedies. Walt Whitman even wrote poetry about his beloved herb in 'Leaves of Grass'. Calamus was also widely used by Canadian trappers working for the Hudson Bay Company, using it as a stimulant, chewing a small piece whenever tired. The balsamic resin from the leaves, bark and roots of the plant Styrax benzoin has been used for centuries as an antiseptic, bacteriacide, incense and perfume – more correctly, one should say as an antiseptic incense. Benzoin is primarily used for incense. The aroma of benzoin is a sweet-balsamic odor with a distinct vanilla note. Its use as a cleansing religious incense is ancient. InIndia, the fragrance is sacred to the Brahma-Shiva-Vishnu triad, and Malays use it to deter devils during rice-harvesting ceremonies. Benzoin is widely applied in Orthodox and Catholic Christian religious service. The benzoin tree is cultivated in Borneo, Java, Malaysia, Sumatra and Thailand. Like the rubber tree, its gum is taken from the bark by making a deep incision in the trunk. The gum is dark, with reddish-brown colored streaks. These pigments contain the fatty oils which exude a delicious aroma similar to vanilla. The Arabs, who traded it as a frankincense substitute, called this Southeast Asia tree 'incense of Java,' or loban jawi. The Europeans interpreted this as benjawi and pronounced it 'benjamin,' then 'benzoin.' They made solid 'vanilla' pomades from it. The Arab medical and religious tradition is very interesting. It is summarized by Dr. M. Laiq Ali Khan on http://www.islamicvoice.com/march.2001/prophet.htm: 'Hazrat Abdullah Bin Jafar narrates that Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) said: 'fumigate your houses with Loban and sheesh.' (Baihaqui).' 'The long standing, bad and putrified wounds are healed with Loban speedily. The fumigation of Loban is a good insect repellent. It has qualities of an insecticide, is antiseptic and fights epidemics.' The Europeans, of course, picked up on this Arab medical tradition. The benzoic acid present in it gives it value in medicine as an antiseptic, as a stimulant, and, in certain respiratory diseases, as an inhalant. Benzoin is an ingredient of Friar's Balsam which is still widely used. It may be applied topically to wounds and ulcers to protect and disinfect the skin. Violet Leaf, Pansy, C/S (Viola tricolor) 1 lb: K

The Heartsease or Pansy, Viola tricolor, is used the same way as the Blue or Sweet-scented Violet, Viola odorata. As King's puts it, 'The V. tricolor, or pansy, may be used as a substitute.' Used as an infusion, strong decoction and syrup. Medicinal and edible, the flowers and leaves of viola are made into a syrup used in alternative medicine mainly for respiratory ailments associated with congestion, coughing, and sore throat. Flowers are also edible and used as food additives for instance in salad, made into jelly, and candied for decoration. Tea made from the leaves is used to treat digestive disorders and new research has detected the presence of a glycoside of salicylic acid (natural aspirin) which substantiates its use for centuries as a medicinal remedy for headache, body pains and as a sedative. The plants constituents include eugenol, ferulic-acid, kaempferol, quercetin, and scopoletin. Used externally the leaf infusion reduces swelling and soothes irritations. As a bath additive the leaves are soothing to the skin and the aroma is very relaxing. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The Violet is still found in the Pharmacopoeias.' Of the leaves, Gerard tells us that they: 'are used in cooling plasters, oyles and comfortable cataplasms or poultices, and are of greater efficacies amongst other herbs as Mercury, Mallowes and such like in clisters for the purposes aforesaid.' 'They are an old popular remedy for bruises.' 'The glucosidal principles contained in the leaves have not yet been fully investigated, but would appear to have distinct antiseptic properties.' 'Of late years, preparations of fresh Violet leaves have been used both internally and externally in the treatment of cancer, and though the British Pharmacopoeia does not uphold the treatment, it specifies how they are employed. From other sources it is stated that Violet leaves have been used with benefit to allay the pain in cancerous growths, especially in the throat, which no other treatment relieved, and several reputed cures have been recorded.' 'An infusion of the leaves in boiling water (1 in 5) has been administered in doses of 1 to 2 fluid ounces. A syrup of the petals and a liquid extract of the fresh leaves are also used, the latter taken in teaspoonful doses, or rubbed in locally. The fresh leaves are also prepared as a compress for local application.' 'The infusion is generally drunk cold and is made as follows: Take 2½ oz. of Violet leaves, freshly picked. Wash them clean in cold water and place them in a stone jar and pour over them 1 pint of boiling water. Tie the jar down and let it stand for twelve hours, till the water is green.
