The dried berries and leaves have been recommended for scurvy, urinary tract infections, kidney stones and diarrhea. Modern research on bilberry was kick-started by British World War II pilots, who noticed that their night vision improved when they ate bilberry jam prior to night bombing raids. The plant appears to assist the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye, in adjusting quickly to both dark and light. Research has shown that this is probably a result of the plant's anthocyanosides, which have antioxidant properties and appear to boost oxygen and blood delivery to the eye. In one study of 50 patients with age-related cataracts, it was found that taking bilberry extract along with vitamin E supplements stopped the progression of cataracts in nearly all of the participants. The study did not, however, isolate the effects of the vitamin from the bilberry. But bilberry has also shown promise in the treatment of other eye disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy and pigmentary retinitis, so bilberries and eyes seem to go together. Anthocyanosides also appear to strengthen collagen, the protein that provides support to healthy connective tissue. Anthocyanosides help larger blood vessels maintain good circulation throughout the body. A 1988, single-blind, placebo-controlled study of this herb included 60 patients with poor circulation (venous insufficiency). The results showed that bilberry extract decreased the participants' discomfort when taken over a period of 30 days. Bilberry's astringent tannins help with diarrhea, sore throat, and inflammations in the mouth. A cooled tea made from the dried berries can be either drunk or gargled for these purposes. Bilberry is also strongly antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial. Extracts of bilberry have proven antiviral in cell culture for herpes simplex virus II, influenza, and vaccinia viruses. Prized in Asian countries as a nutritious table green, it can also be made into delicious jams and jellies. Kudzu shoots are used by nursing mothers as a lactagogue. Bearberry is also traditionally used as a medicinal tea, to treat inflammations of the urinary tract, especially cystitis. Uva ursi contains arbutin, an effective urinary antiseptic. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Uva ursi leaf for 'Inflammatory disorders of the efferent urinary tract.' 'Preparations made from bearberries act antibacterially in vitro against Proteus vulgaris, E. coli, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aerginosa, Friedländer's pneumonia, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus strains, as well as against Candida albicans. The antimicrobial effect is associated with the aglycone hydroquinone released from arbutin (transport form) or arbutin waste products in the alkaline urine. A methanol extract of the drug (50 percent) is said to have an inhibiting effect on tyrosinase activity. The forming of melanin from DOPA using tyrosinase as well as from DOPA-CHROM through auto-oxidation is also said to be inhibited by the drug.' Contraindications: Pregnancy, lactation, children under 12. Side Effects: Nausea and vomiting may occur in persons with sensitive stomachs. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': C. Marilandica or American Senna, Wild Senna, Poinciana pulcherima, formerly Maryland Senna, is a common perennial from New England to Northern Carolina. Its leaves are compressed into oblong cakes like other herbal preparations of the Shakers. It acts like Senna, but is weaker, and should be combined with aromatics. The dose in powder is from 1/2 to 2 1/2 drachms. For the infusion, add 1 ounce of the leaves and 1 drachm of coriander seeds to 1 pint of boiling water. Macerate for an hour in a covered vessel, and strain. Dose: 4 to 5 fluid ounces. These leaves are also found mixed with or substituted for Alexandrian Senna. King's American Dispensatory. by Harvey Wickes Felter, M.D., and John Uri Lloyd, Phr. M., Ph. D., 1898. Anexcellent cathartic, equal to the imported article, for which it may be substituted. The species Piper longum is of South Asian origin (Dekkan penisular), whereas the closely related Piper retrofractum comes from South East Asia and is mostly cultivated in Indonesia and Thailand. It was highly priced during the Roman Empire – about three times the price of black pepper. With its taste pungent and sweet at the same time, it was perfect for Roman cookery especially fond of these two taste sensations (see silphion for details). In our days, long pepper is nearly unknown and sometimes hard to obtain. Since terpene components are missing in its aroma, long pepper cannot be substituted by ordinary black pepper (you may try white pepper plus a little bit of mace, though). Its hot-and-sweet taste goes well with spicy cheese specialities (it's a ''secret'' of my personal cheese fondue mixture) or wine sauces. In Asia, two different plants with exactly the same sensoric properties are used: Piper retrofractum from Indonesia has rods a little bit smaller than Piper longum from India (bengal pepper). In Western countries, mostly the latter is available. Since long pepper is more pungent than black pepper, it must be used with care, unless you like fiery food. Crush the rods before use. In India, the main application for long pepper are pickles (in Hindi, achar). Rather remarkably, long pepper is also known and popular in parts of Africa, namely in the Islâmic regions of North and East Africa, whereto it has been introduced by Arab traders. Therefore, long pepper is sometimes found in the complex spice mixtures of Morocco (ras el hanout, see cubeb pepper); but it is also of some importance for the cuisine of Ethiopia, where long pepper is usually found in the traditional meat stews (wat), mostly together with black pepper, nutmeg, cloves and turmeric; the usage of turmeric exemplifies Indian influence in Ethiopian cuisine. Spice usage in Ethiopia (and its neighbour Eritrea) furthermore parallels India: For example, the classical Ethiopian spice mixture berebere resembles Indian masalas (see cumin) not only in its list of ingredients, but also in its preparation process. Berebere is a really hot mixtureand traditionally used to spice mutton dishes; it is made by roasting dry chiles a few minutes until they darken and subsequent adding of long and black pepper, ginger, coriander fruits, fenugreek and a little bit of ajwain. Sweet tones, which are essential for the cooking styles of all Arabic nations, are achieved by cinnamon, cardamom seeds, cloves and even allspice. While studying regeneration of limbs, spinal cords and organs in the late 1970s, Robert O. Becker, M.D., author of "The Body Electric," discovered that silver ions promote bone growth and kill surrounding bacteria. He recognized a correlation between low silver levels and sickness. He said Silver deficiency was responsible for the improper functioning of the immune system. Dr. Becker's experiments conclude that silver works on the full spectrum of pathogens without any side effects or damage to the body. He also states that silver does more than kill disease-causing organisms. It alsocauses major growth stimulation of injured tissues. Burn patients and even elderly patients notice more rapid healing. And he discovered that all cancer cells can change back to normal cells. All strains of pathogens resistant to other antibiotics are killed by silver.
