The shaman as well as the layman chewed the stem bark (scraped of its thorns) for its emetic and purgative effects as well as for a general cure-all. These people also drank devil's club infusions and used the bark as poultices and on hot rocks in the bath house. The Haida people were still using devil's club for a variety of complaints in 1965. (Justice, cited in Kari) They would mix the dried inner bark with cedar or spruce pitch for a waterproof dressing for wounds. Other groups of people on the Northwest Coast have used the plant for medicine and to obtain supernatural power. The modern medical world has been interested in devil's club since the 1930s, due to the discovery of the possible presence of an insulinlike substance in the plant. The plant appears to assist the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye, in adjusting quickly to both dark and light. Research has shown that this is probably a result of the plant's anthocyanosides, which have antioxidant properties and appear to boost oxygen and blood delivery to the eye. In one study of 50 patients with age-related cataracts, it was found that taking bilberry extract along with vitamin E supplements stopped the progression of cataracts in nearly all of the participants. The study did not, however, isolate the effects of the vitamin from the bilberry. But bilberry has also shown promise in the treatment of other eye disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy and pigmentary retinitis, so bilberries and eyes seem to go together. The German Commission E has concluded that 'Since the effectiveness for the claimed uses is not documented and risks are known, the application of walnut hull preparations cannot be justified.' Use of Walnut hulls is best confined to their insect-repelling and dying functions. Acacia Bark (Acacia arabica), also known as Wattle Bark, is obtained from the chief of the Australian Wattles, the Black Wattle, and is collected from wild or cultivated trees, seven years old or more, and must be allowed to mature for a year before being used medicinally. Acacia Bark contains from 24-42% of tannin (gallic acid). Acacia Bark's powerful astringency causes this herb to be extensively employed in the tanning industry. Medicinally, Acacia Bark is employed as a substitute for Oak Bark. Acacia Bark has special use in diarrhea, mainly in the form of a decoction, the British Pharmacopoeia preparation being 6 partsin 100 administered in doses of 1/2 to 2 fluid ounces. The decoction also is used as an astringent gargle, lotion, or injection. A liquid extract is prepared from the bark, administered in India for its astringent properties in doses of 1/2 to 1 fluid, but the use of both gum and bark for industrial purposes is much larger than their use in medicine.
