Catnip Leaf C/S (Nepeta cataria) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture and smoke. Have you ever seen a cat on catnip? It's hilarious – they go bonkers. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, vol. 207, pages 1349-1350, 1969) published a paper that described the psychoactive effects of catnip in people. People who smoked catnip were said to become happy and relaxed. Catnip has always been used by people, for whom it is a mild, safe sedative. Catnip tea was a regular beverage in England before the introduction of tea from China. It is a traditional cold remedy. It also is traditonally used for upset stomach and children's ailments, such diarrhea, hysteria and nightmare. The essential oil in catnip contains a monoterpene similar to the valepotriates found in valerian, an even more widely renowned sedative. Animal studies (except those involving cats, who seem to have a sexual thing for catnip) have found it to increase sleep. The monoterpenes also help with coughs. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Carminative, tonic, diaphoretic, refrigerant and slightly emmenagogue, specially antispasmodic, and mildly stimulating.' 'Producing free perspiration, it is very useful in colds. Catnep Tea is a valuable drink in every case of fever, because of its action in inducing sleep and producing perspiration without increasing the heat of the system.' 'It is good in restlessness, colic, insanity and nervousness, and is used as a mild nervine for children, one of its chief uses being, indeed, in the treatment of children's ailments.' 'The infusion of 1 oz. to a pint of boiling water may be taken by adults in doses of 2 tablespoonsful, by children in 2 or 3 teaspoonsful frequently, to relieve pain and flatulence. An injection of Catnep Tea is also used for colicky pains.' 'The herb should always be infused, boiling will spoil it. Its qualities are somewhat volatile, hence when made it should be covered up.' 'The tea may be drunk freely, but if taken in very large doses when warm, it frequently acts as an emetic.' 'It has provedefficacious in nervous headaches and as an emmenagogue, though for the latter purpose, it is preferable to use Catnep, not as a warm tea, but to express the juice of the green herb and take it in tablespoonful doses, three times a day.' 'An injection of the tea also relieves headache and hysteria, by its immediate action upon the sacral plexus. The young tops, made into a conserve, have been found serviceable for nightmare.' 'Catnep may be combined with other agents of a more decidedly diaphoretic nature. Equal parts of warm Catnep tea and Saffron are excellent in scarlet-fever and small-pox, as well as colds and hysterics. It will relieve painful swellings when applied in the form of a poultice or fomentation.' 'Old writers recommended a decoction of the herb, sweetened with honey for relieving a cough, and Culpepper tells us also that 'the juice d Manufacturer: Starwest Botanicals SKU: 17488 Category: Bulk Herbs-Intestinal Support

Reishi Extract (Ganoderma lucidum/Ling Zhi): 1 fl oz: F
About 50 dropperfuls per bottle. That's dropperfuls, not drops. A traditional tonic used to nourish, tonify, and supplement the whole body as it removes toxins and disperses accumulation. As a tonic it calms and nourishes the nervous system, strengthens the lungs, protects and stimulates the liver and helps the body adapt to stress. Considered among the most powerful natural healing herbs in Asia, Red Reishi was very rare and expensive to obtain until recently. Reishi is rich in active organic compounds such as polysaccharides, amino acids, proteins, triterpenes, ascorbic acid, sterols, lipids, alkaloids, a glucose, a courmarine glycoside, volatile oil, riboflavin and more. These compounds are being studied for their positive effects on the immune system, including anti-tumor activity. Asian cultures have also used Reishi, rendered in jade, as a talisman worn around the neck. Sometimes, whole dried Reishi are placed in the home to ward off evil. We offer Fungi Perfecti’s alcohol-based medicinal mushroom extracts, in 1 and 2 fluid ounce bottles, made from pure mushroom mycelium cultured on Certified Organic brown rice. 30 drops of extract is equivalent to 1 gram of mushroom mycelium/fruitbodies, and can be consumed directly or mixed into your favorite beverage. Recommended use: 15 to 30 drops, twice per day. Since 1980, FungiPerfecti has been at the forefront of the gourmet and medicinal mushroom movement. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Safflower make a nice tea when mixed with some cassia, citrus peel, and Chinese black tea. Safflower tea has traditionally been used as a diaphoretic and emmenagogue. Safflower is also called 'Dyer's Saffron.' It can be added to soap to color it yellow to deep orange, and it is nice for coloring rice, bread or cheese, since it adds color without altering the taste. Since ancient times, orange pigments for coloring decorative straw, paper and cloth have been obtained from safflower. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The flowers are the part used, their action is laxative and diaphoretic. In domestic practice these flowers are used in children's and infants' complaints - measles, fevers, and eruptive skin eomplaints. An infusion is made of ½ oz. of the flowers to a pint of boiling water taken warm to produce diaphorasis.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Dyer's saffron, when the warm infusion is used, is said to restore the menstrual discharge which has been recently suppressed by cold; also when taken largely, to produce an action on the bowels.' 'The warm infusion is often employed as a diaphoretic in domestic practice among children and infants in measles, scarlet fever, and other eruptive maladies. It may be given tolerably freely.' 'The infusion may be made by infusing 1 or 2 drachms of the flowers in ½ pint of boiling water. The seeds are white and angular, and have been much used as a purgative and emmenagogue. They yield an oil by expression, which has been used as a local application in rheumatic and paralytic affections; also for bad ulcers.' Lion's Mane Plug Spawn: 100 dowels (Hericium erinaceus): F
Hericium erinaceus grows primarily on hardwoods, though conifers can also be used with some success. Mycelium is whitish in color. The spawn plugs should be inserted into the open face of cut wood. This eminently edible mushroom species is ideal for inoculation into stumps or partially buried logs. Hericium erinaceus is widely distributed on hardwoods, particularly oaks, and can be found naturally across much of North America. These are beautiful mushrooms, with cascading white icicle-like spines, and are some of the best of the edible fungi. Fungi Perfecti's Plug Spawn consists of mushroom mycelium growing on small, spiral-grooved birch dowels. By using the dowels to inoculate cut hardwood logs or stumps, mushroom mycelium can be encouraged to grow throughout or colonize the wood. Once the wood is fully colonized (typically 9-12 months) mushrooms will spring forth from cracks or channels in the wood. Fungi Perfecti's Plug Spawn comes with a 10-page instruction booklet. Generally, the best time of year to inoculate logs and stumps is in the Spring, after your last hard frost. However, you can inoculate your logs any time up to 2-3 weeks before consistently (i.e. 'round the clock) freezing temperatures set in for the Winter. The idea is to allow the mushroom mycelium growing on the Plug Spawn time to establish itself in its new home before it goes into dormancy over the Winter. Logs should be cut to lengths of 3-4 feet, and are best if they do not exceed 14 inches in diameter. Use a 5/16'' drill bit in a high-speed drill to drill 2-inch holes no more than 4 inches apart, evenly spaced along the logs. Stumps should be inoculated along the circumference of their face, in the border between the bark and the heartwood. Insert 1 plug per hole and whack it in with a hammer. A 3-4 foot log can take 50 or more plugs, while stumps usually hold 30-50 plugs Holes can be sealed with cheese wax or beeswax to protect the mycelium while it is growing; although this step can be helpful, it is not absolutely necessary. Our Plug Spawn prefers to grow on hardwoods, with the exception of the Conifer Coral Mushroom, which grows on conifers, and the Phoenix Oyster, which grows well on firs. Most species can be grown on either logs or stumps. Non-aromatic hardwoods such as oak, poplar (cottonwood), elm, maple and similar woods are very good candidates for log cultivation. Alder is a good wood for the cultivation of Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms, but must be kept above ground because it will decompose quickly in contact with the soil. (We do not recommend using aromatic woods such as cedar or eucalyptus.) Thick-barked woods are preferable over ''paper-bark'' woods such as birch, and any log that is shedding it's bark should not be used. Logs should be cut one to three months in advance of plugging. Cutting your logs in the late Winter or early Spring helps to insure that they have a high sugar content, although this is not strictly necessary. Freshly-cut logs should Manufacturer: Fungi Perfecti SKU: 10742 Category: Bulk Herbs-Mushrooms

Scullcap Extract (Scutellaria lateriflora) 2 fl oz: HH
Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. Used by Native Americans, this plant is an effective sedative and antispasmodic. Modern studies have confirmed this ancient tradition. Scutellarian, a major constituent, has been clinically shown to have mild sedative and antispasmodic actions. As an effective sedative and antispamodic, scullcap, or scutellarian, is used in formulas for hysteria, seizures, asthma, menstrual cramping, epilepsy, insomnia, pain, vertigo and addiction recovery. Grieve’s classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Scullcap has strong tonic, nervine and antispasmodic action, and is slightly astringent.' 'In hysteria, convulsions, hydrophobia, St. Vitus's dance and rickets, its action is invaluable. In nervous headaches, neuralgia and in headache arising from incessant coughing and pain, it offers one of the most suitable and reliable remedies. The dried extract, given in doses of from 1 to 3 grains as a pill, will relieve severe hiccough.' 'It is considered a specific for the convulsive twitchings of St. Vitus's dance, soothing the nervous excitement and inducing sleep when necessary, without any unpleasant symptoms following.' 'Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm.' 'It may be prescribed in all disorders of the nervous system, and has been suggested as a remedy for epilepsy. Writing on this point in the British Medical Journal, 1915, Dr. William Bramwell says: 'Its efficacy appears to be partly due to its stimulating the kidneys to increased activity....' 'The usual dose is an infusion of 1 oz. of the powdered herb to a pint of boiling water, given in half-teacupful doses, every few hours. Both fluid and solid extracts are prepared and Scutellarin is also administered in doses of 1 to 2 grains.' 'Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Scullcap is tonic, nervine, and antispasmodic. This is one of those valuable agents which a certain class of physicians consider inert; yet it has proved especially useful in chorea, convulsions, tremors, intermittent fever, neuralgia, and many nervous affections.' 'In delirium tremens, an infusion drank freely will soon produce a calm sleep. In intermittents it may be beneficially combined with lycopus. Where teething has impaired the health of children, an infusion maybe given with advantage. In all cases of nervous excitability, restlessness, or wakefulness, attending or following acute or chronic diseases, from physical or mental overwork, or from other causes, it may be drank freely with every expectation of beneficial results.' 'The warm infusion has a tendency to keep the skin moist; the cold has a tonic influence, and either may be drank freely. When its soothing effects have ceased, it does not leave an excitable, irritable condition of the system, as is the case with some other nervines.' 'That it influences the cerebro-spinal centers, controlling nervous irritation there can be no doubt and this fact is well illustrated by its control over functional ca Manufacturer: Health and Herbs SKU: 116921 Category: Capsules, Extracts, A-H-Extracts
Slippery Elm Bark Powder (Ulmus fulva) 1 lb: K
This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion, decoction, poultice and salve. Slippery Elm Bark is a soothing, astringent demulcent, useful for ulcers, gastritis, colitis, diarrhea and other intestinal problems. A terrific throat-soother in bronchitis (see Grieve's recipe below). It is also an easily digested food for convalescence. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Demulcent, emollient, expectorant, diuretic, nutritive. The bark of this American Elm, though not in this country as in the United States an official drug, is considered one of the most valuable remedies in herbal practice, the abundant mucilage it contains having wonderfully strengthening and healing qualities.' 'It not only has a most soothing and healing action on all the parts it comes in contact with, but in addition possesses as much nutrition as is contained in oatmeal, and when madeinto gruel forms a wholesome and sustaining food for infants and invalids. It forms the basis of many patent foods.' 'Slippery Elm Food is generally made by mixing a teaspoonful of the powder into a thin and perfectly smooth paste with cold water and then pouring on a pint of boiling water, steadily stirring meanwhile. It can, if desired, be flavoured with cinnamon, nutmeg or lemon rind.' 'This makes an excellent drink in cases of irritation of the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines, and taken at night will induce sleep.' 'Another mode of preparation is to beat up an egg with a teaspoonful of the powdered bark, pouring boiling milk over it and sweetening it.' 'Taken unsweetened, three times a day, Elm Food gives excellent results in gastritis, gastric catarrh, mucous colitis and enteritis, being tolerated by the stomach when all other foods fail, and is of great value in bronchitis, bleeding from the lungs and consumption (being most healing to the lungs), soothing a cough and building up and preventing wasting.' 'A Slippery Elm compound excellent for coughs is made as follows: Cut obliquely one or more ounces of bark into pieces about the thickness of a match; add a pinch of Cayenne flavour with a slice of lemon and sweeten, infusing the whole in a pint of boiling water and letting it stand for 25 minutes. Take this frequently in small doses: for a consumptive patient, about a pint a day is recommended. It is considered one of the best remedies that can be given as it combines both demulcent and stimulating properties. Being mucilaginous, it rolls up the mucous material so troublesome to the patient and passes it down through the intestines.' 'In typhoid fever, the Slippery Elm drink, prepared as for coughs, is recommended, serving a threefold purpose, to cleanse, heal and strengthen, the patient being allowed to drink as much as desired until thirst has abated, and other remedies can be used. If the patient is not thirsty, a dose of 2 large tablespoonfuls every hour for an Manufacturer: Frontier Natural Brands Bulk Herbs SKU: 22825 Category: Bulk Herbs-Intestinal Support

Gunpowder Green Tea 1 lb.: K
This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. 'Gunpowder' is a strong tasting green tea made from the highest quality first-harvested tea. The tea was named 'Gunpowder' by an imaginative English clerk who thought the tiny rolled green tea balls looked like balls of gunpowder. The Chinese name is Siaou Chu, which means 'large leaf.' It is also called 'Pearl Tea.' Rolling the leaf both forces out the water and brings the flavorful juices to the surface. The dehydrated pellet retains its shape during firing and keeps its freshness longer than tea not manufactured in pellet form. Once immersed in water, the tea leaf extends, revealing the entire whole leaf. Green tea should be steeped in very hot, but not boiling, water. Boiling water will scorch the delicate flavor, rendering it bitter. Green tea comes mainly from China, Japan, Taiwan and, to a lesser degree, India. The critical difference between green and black tea is that green tea leaves are not allowed to ferment. Green tea is, instead, steamed, rolled and fired. Green tea is the natural dried leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Black tea is oxidized green tea. The phrase 'Black Tea' is also used as a generic name for all Camelia sinensis teas. The major Black Tea types, from the traditional black tea evergeen (Camellia sinensis), classified according to processing method, include: fermented, or black, tea, producing an amber-coloured, full-flavoured beverage without bitterness; semi-fermented, or oolong, producing a slightly bitter, light brownish-green liquid; and unfermented, or green, tea, resulting in a mild, slightly bitter, pale greenish-yellow beverage. Tea contains only four calories per cup when consumed without added ingredients but is a source of several B-complex vitamins, including B2 and nicotinic acid. Caffeine is responsible for tea's stimulating effect. Flavor is produced by volatile oils, and astringency and color by tannin. Black teas are classified by geographical origin and the size of the processed leaf. Traditional operations result in larger leafy grades and smaller broken grades. The leafy grades are flowery pekoe (FP), orange pekoe (OP), pekoe (P), pekoe souchong (PS), and souchong (S). BOP=Broken Orange pekoe; FOP=Flowery Orange Pekoe; TGFOP-Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe; FTGFOP=Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe. Green tea is not graded similar to black tea but classified according to age, style of the leaf and manufacture, e.g., Gunpowder, Pan-fired, Young Hysson, Bancha, etc. Since green tea, unlike black and oolong tea, is not fermented, the active constituents remain unaltered in theherb. Green tea is bioflavonoid-rich, proven useful for fighting free radical damage in the human body. It has a high content of polyphenols, which are a class of bioflavonoids. Green tea's best studied polyphenol is Epigallocatechin Gallate. Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), Manufacturer: Frontier Natural Brands SKU: 27841 Category: Teas & Coffees-Antioxidant Tea

Wild Lettuce Herb Powder (Lactuca altissima) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, tincture and smoke. Wild lettuce is also called 'Lettuce Opium.' It has traditionally been used as a relaxant. Lactuca altissima, also called Lactuca quercina, is not, strictly speaking, Lactuca virosa, although the two plants are so closely related they have often been mistaken for one another by the herbal authorities over the years (http://www.inra.fr/flore-france/la-ld.htm). The sesquiterpene lactones from Lactuca altissima are chemically identical to those from Lactuca virosa. As Grieve puts it, 'All lettuces possess some of this narcotic juice, Lactuca virosa having the most, and the others in the following order: L. scariola, or Prickly Lettuce, L. altissima, L. Canadensis, or Wild Lettuce of America, and L. sativa, or Garden Lettuce.' As King's puts it, 'The most energetic lactucarium is said to be obtained from L. virosa and L. altissima.' Wild lettuce is called 'Lettuce Opium' not in the politicized modern sense, but in the medicinal 19th century way, meaning that it is a valuable nervine, anodyne, hypnotic and anti-spasmodic, useful for restlessness, sleeplessness, and hysteria in children. Also helpful with a hacking cough, and in relieving rheumatic pain. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The Wild Lettuce grows on banks and waste places, flowering in July and August. It is cultivated in Austria, France, Germany and Scotland. Collectors cut the heads of the plants and scrape the juice into china vessels several times daily until it is exhausted. By slightly warming and tapping, it is turned out of its cup mould, is cut into quarters and dried.' 'In the United States, after importation from Germany via England it is said to be used as an adulterant for opium. It is usually found in irregular, reddish-brown lumps the size of a large pea, frequently mouldy on the outside. In the United States the German and French lactucarium is considered inferior to the British product.' 'All lettuces possess some of this narcotic juice, Lactuca virosa having the most, and theothers in the following order: L. scariola, or Prickly Lettuce, L. altissima, L. Canadensis, or Wild Lettuce of America, and L. sativa, or Garden Lettuce. Cultivation has lessened the narcotic properties of the last, but it is still used for making a lotion for the skin useful in sunburn and roughness. The Ancients held the lettuce in high esteem for its cooling and refreshing properties. The Emperor Augustus attributed his recovery from a dangerous illness to it; built an altar to it, and erected a statue in its honour.' 'Lactucarium is not easily powdered, and is only slightly soluble in boiling water, though it softens and becomes plastic.' 'L. virosa has been found to contain lactucic acid, lactucopicrin, 50 to 60 per cent lactucerin (lactucone) and lactucin. Lactucarium treated with boiling water and filtered is clear, but on cooling the filtrate becomes Manufacturer: Starwest Botanicals SKU: 20699 Category: Bulk Herbs-All Bulk Herbs

Chastetree Fruit (Vitex rotundifolia; Man Jing Zi) 5:1 Extract Powder 100 gm: V
This is a potent 5 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that one gram of extract is equal in potency to 5 grams of herb. This extract is packed in Plum Flower Brand's nitrogen-flushed, safety-sealed dispenser bottle, a sample of which is pictured above. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. This is a pure herbal product with no additives. Extracted from sulfur-free and chlorine-free herbs for superior quality. Manufactured in a low-temperature water extraction process to preserve herb integrity. Extracted essential oils are replenished for proper potency. Strict quality control testing to ensure microbiological and heavy metal safety. Only powdered herb added to maintain purity (no artificial fillers such as lactose, cellulose or starch used). TLC(Thin-layer Chromatography) tested to guarantee product quality. Plum Flower takes great care to preserve delicate herbal oils, which are first evaporated using either a water or water-alcohol base in a process that never exceeds 100° centigrade. Sealed vacuum chargers precisely control the temperature, ensuring that none of the oils are lost. Cheaper, high-temperature methods are common industry practice, but these tend to burn off the vital oils. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world. Varuna Fulfillment Center items are special ordered. Elder syrup has been shown to lessen flu symptoms and speed recovery. Elder flowers have been shown to be anti-inflammatory. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Elder Flowers and Elder Berries have long been used in the English countryside for making many home-made drinks and preserves that are almost as great favourites now as in the time of our great-grandmothers. The berries make an excellent home-made wine and winter cordial, which improves with age, and taken hot with sugar, just before going to bed, is an old-fashioned and well established cure for a cold.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: (of the closely related Sambucus canadensis) 'Sambucus canadensis is an indigenous shrub, growing in all parts of the United States... S. nigra is indigenous to Europe, growing in situations similar to those of the American variety. The two plants possess similar medicinal properties. The medicinal parts are the flowers, the berries, and the inner bark.' 'Sambucus is stimulant to all of the emunctories, increasing secretion.' 'In warm infusion, elder flowers are diaphoretic and gently stimulant; in cold infusion, they are diuretic, alterative, and cooling, and may be used in all diseases requiring such action, as in hepatic derangements of children, erysipelas, erysipelatous diseases, etc. In infusion, with maidenhair andbeech-drops, they will be found very valuable in all ery Manufacturer: Starwest Botanicals SKU: 18144 Category: Bulk Herbs-All Bulk Herbs

White Poplar Bark Extract (Populus alba) 2 fl oz: HH
A deciduous Eurasian tree which now grows throughout the U.S., it is a very close relative of, and equated by the herbalists with the native American White Poplar (Populus tremuloides). As Grieve puts it: "The bark probably has similar properties to that of Populus tremula of Europe, i.e. salicin and populin." Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': Febrifuge and tonic, chiefly used in intermittent fevers. It has been employed as a diuretic in urinary affections, gonorrhoea and gleet. The infusion has been found helpful in debility, chronic diarrhcea, etc. Is a valuable and safe substitute for Peruvian bark. Dosages: Fluid extract, 1 drachm. Of salicin, in intermittents, 10 to 30 grains. Of populin, 1 to 4 grains. King's American Dispensatory. by Harvey Wickes Felter, M.D., and John Uri Lloyd, Phr. M., Ph. D., 1898. Poplar bark is tonic and febrifuge, and has been used in intermittent fever with advantage. An infusion of it is reputed avaluable remedy in emaciation and debility, after protracted fevers and reproductive disorders of the nervous and hysterical, lumbricoid worms, impaired digestion, chronic diarrhoea, intermittent fevers, etc. As a diuretic, it has been beneficially used in urinary affections, gonorrhoea, gleet, etc. Both populus and populin have a decided affinity for the genito-urinal tract. It is thought to aid the recuperative powers of the kidney when undergoing granular degeneration. Dose of the powdered bark, 1 drachm, 2 or 3 times a day; of a saturated tincture of the fresh bark, from a fraction of a drop to 30 drops; of populin, 1 x trituration, 1 grain every 2 or 4 hours. The American Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacognosy. by Finley Ellingwood, M.D., 1919. Protracted fevers, with debility and emaciation, are greatly benefited by the use of this remedy, and the conditions remaining in early convalescence are quickly overcome. The agent is a tonic to the kidneys, increasing their functional activity, relieving vesical and urethral tenesmus. it will also overcome prostatic hypertrophy in some cases, and is available in uterine congestion. It is of service in impaired digestion, either gastric or intestinal, chronic diarrhoea, with general debility. Dr. Alter of Arkansas has given it for many years for swamp fever. He also uses it in the irregularities of women. He thinks it acts somewhat as hydrastis in promoting a physiological action of all organs, and increasing the vital force within the system. It may be well given in conjunction with hydrastis. Dr. Alter used it very widely whether it was strictly indicated or not, and became convinced of its active therapeutic property. Juniper Berry Blue Whole (Juniperus communis) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. The berries can be eaten whole, crushed, cooked with sweetner, or brewed into a tea, boiled to decoction strength, or steepd in wine. Juniper is the flavoring agent in gin. Juniper has traditionallybeen used in the making of everything from soap to perfume. Juniper ointment is a soothing antiseptic treatment for eczema and psoriasis. Juniper is an effective urinary antiseptic, and is carminative. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Juniper berry for 'Dyspepsia.' 'Contraindications: Pregnancy and inflammation of the kidneys. Side Effects: Prolonged usage or overdosing may cause kidney damage.' 'Daily dose: 2 to a maximum of 10 g of the dried juniper fruit, corresponding to 20 - 100 mg of the essential oil. Mode of Administration: Whole, crushed, or powdered drug for infusions and decoctions, alcohol extracts, and in wine. Essential oil. Liquid and solid medicinal forms only for oral application.' Combinations with other plant drugs in teas and similar preparations for treating bladder and kidney diseases may be helpful.' 'Action: Animal experiments have shown an increase in urine excretion as well as a direct effect on smooth muscle contraction.' Juniper is often combined with other diuretic and antimicrobial herbs for bladder and kidney conditions. The volatile oils cause an increase in urine volume, which seems to lower uric acid levels. Although juniper lignans inhibit the herpes simplex virus in laboratory studies, treatment for human herpes infections by juniper has yet to be proven. The traditional use of juniper in topical ointments, however, does seem to have some lab confirmation. Juniper contains bitter substances, at least partly accounting for its traditional use in digestive upset and related problems. The tea is made thick, a teaspoon of juniper berries being allowed to steep for 20 minutes in just one cup of boiling water. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Oil of Juniper is given as a diuretic, stomachic, and carminative in indigestion, flatulence, and diseases of the kidney and bladder. Spirit of Juniper has properties resembling Oil of Turpentine: it is employed as a stimulating diuretic in cardiac and hepatic dropsy. The fruit is readily eaten by most animals, especially sheep, and is said to prevent and cure dropsy in the latter.' 'The chief use of Juniper is as an adjuvant to diuretics in dropsy depending on heart, liver or kidney disease. It imparts a violet odour to the urine, and large doses may cause irritation to the passages. An infusion of 1 oz. to 1 pint of boiling water may be taken in the course of twenty-four hours. In France the berries have been used in chest complaints and in leucorrhoea, blenorrhoea, scrofula, etc. They are not given in substance. The oil is a local stimulant.' Buchu Leaf Extract (Barosma betulina) 2 fl oz: HH
Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. Buchu grows mainly in the Cedarberg mountains of South Africa. Hottentots traditionally use the fragrant leaves, which are delicious in tea, as a perfume, by rubbing it on their bodies. They also made a Buchu brandy by distilling the leaves with wine and used a strong decoction to wash wounds. Buchu is aromatic, antiseptic, carminative and diaphoretic, of use especially for urinary tract disorders. The herb's diuretic activity is thought to be due to the presence of the volatile oil diosphenol, which may also be antibacterial. There is occasional gastrointestinal intolerance to Barosma so it should not be taken on an empty stomach. It is contraindicated during pregnancy. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'In gravel, inflammation and catarrh of the bladder it is specially useful. The infusion (B.P.) of 1 oz. of leaves to 1 pint of boiling water is taken in wineglassful doses three or four times a day.' Other Preparations: Fluid extract: dose, ½ to 1 drachm. Tincture, B.P.: dose, ½ to 1 drachm. Solid extract: dose, 5 to 15 grains. Barosmin: dose, 2 to 3 grains.' 'Buchu has long been known at the Cape as a stimulant tonic and remedy for stomachic troubles, where it is infused in Brandy and known as Buchu Brandy. Its use was learnt from the Hottentots.' 'It was introdueed into official medicine in Great Britain in 1821 as a remedy for cystitis urethritis, nephritis and catarrh of the bladder.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Buchu is an aromatic stimulant and tonic. It promotes the appetite, relieves nausea and flatulence, and acts as a diuretic and diaphoretic. In favoring the urinary secretion it augments both the solid and watery constituents.' 'On the other hand, when the kidneys are excessively active, their action is restrained by buchu. It is principally used in chronic diseases of the urino-genital organs, as in cases of chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bladder, irritable conditions of the urethra, in urinary discharges with increased deposit of uric acid, and in incontinence connected with diseased prostate. Profuse muco, or muco-puruluentdischarges, with vesico-renal irritation, point to its use.' 'It is a remedy where irritation depends upon altered secretions from the urethral glands. Acid urine, with continual desire to urinate and when but little relief is experienced from the effort, calls for buchu. Catarrh of the bladder, from the extension of gonorrhoea, from irritant injections, or due to gleet, is relieved by it.' 'For this use, as well as for long-standing cystic irritability, the patient having difficulty in restraining his urine, administer the following: Rx Specific barosma, fliiiss; tinct. chloride of iron, flss. Mix. Sig. A teaspoonful 4 times a day in a wine-glassful of infusion of hops or in sweetened water.' 'Under favorable circumstances a warm infusion of buchu leaves will cause diaphoresis. Gluco-Pro™ 900 Glucosamine Chondroitin 60 tablets: K
Thompson's Gluco-Pro 900™ is a combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin intended to provide nutritive support to help maintain healthy, mobile joint function and connective tissue. Serving size of 3 tablets provides a full dose of 1500 mg Glucosamine and 1200 mg Chondroitin. Glucosamine-Chondroitin is a combination suggested to maintain structural integrity of joints, blood vessels and connective tissue, stimulate healing and provide relief of symptoms associated with osteoporosis, arthritis, osteoarthritis, joint inflammation, bursitis, tendonitis, cartilage damage, connective tissue, joint, and bone problems. Glucosamine helps provide the building blocks for healthy cartilage and maintain structural integrity of joints and connective tissue.* Glucosamine is a building block for joint fluid, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, membranes and blood vessels.* Primary Use: Supports healthy joint function.* Glucosamine sulfate is produced from shrimp shells, which have esentially the same biochemistry as human cartilage. Glucosamine is not only safe but an active supporter of proteoglycan synthesis (i.e., a producer of cartilage macromolecules consisting of a protein bound to a glucosaminoglycan). There is increasing evidence that Glucosamine does in fact relieve joint pain and inflammation for many arthritis sufferers, and that it may slow progression of the disease. Because of its ability to reduce and--in some cases--completely eliminate the pain of osteoarthritis, some physicians and researchers feel Glucosamine might offer similar benefits for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, spinal disc degeneration, tendinitis, bursitis, and physical injuries to the joints. There is even speculation that it could play a preemptive role, eliminating the development of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, two essential building blocks of cartilage. This appears to 'jump start' the body’s own natural production of Glucosamine. Chondroitin Sulfate (CSA) is from highly purified Bovine Trachea Cartilage. This special process yields 95% pure chondroitin sulfate. Chondroitin sulfate is a major constituent of cartilage, providing structure, holding water and nutrients, and allowing other molecules to move through cartilage. In degenerative joint disease, such as osteoarthritis, there is a loss of chondroitin sulfate as the cartilage erodes. Chondroitin sulfate may promote healing of bone. Chondroitin sulfate hasbeen shown to relieve symptoms and slow the progression of, or reverse, osteoarthritis. Combining Glucosamine with Chondroitin sulfate has been demonstrated to increase its effectiveness. Glucosamine has been used to treat osteoarthritis in Europe since the 1980s. Several recent scientific studies have supported its effectiveness, and its popularity in the U.S. is spreading quickly. Betaine HCL with Pepsin 324 mg 90 tablets: K
Betaine Hydrochloride is a hydrochloric acid-containing supplement, which helps with digestion and destroys bacteria in the stomach and may be beneficial for individuals with high homocysteine levels, low levels of stomach acid, anemia, asthma, gallstones, indigestion, heartburn, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid conditions, and vitiligo. Some research suggests that people with a wide variety of chronic disorders, such as allergies, asthma, and gallstones, do not produce adequate amounts of stomach acid. Betaine HCl is the most common hydrochloric acid-containing supplement. Only people who have reduced levels of stomach acidshould take betaine HCl; this condition can be diagnosed by a doctor. When appropriate, some doctors recommend taking one or more tablets or capsules, each 5–10 grains (325–650 mg), with a meal that contains protein. Well tolerated by most highly allergic individuals. Pau D'arco Bark Powder (Tabebuia impetiginosa) 1 lb: K
This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Also called pink trumpet tree. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture, skin poultice and bath. Pau d’Arco is used internally as a tonic and immunosupportive, and exteranlly for skin support and inflammation. The common name Pau d’Arco is used to refer to more than one species of tree. Tabebuia heptaphylla, pink trumpet tree, is used the same way in herbal medicine as the closely related and chemically similar Tabebuia impetiginosa, purple trumpet tree. Lapachol, for instance, Pau d’Arco's most studied constituent, is commercially extracted from both the pink and purple trumpet tree. Native peoples in Central and South America have long used Pau D'Arco tree bark to treat many conditions. Pau D'Arco is a rich source of iron, which contributes to the elimination of wastes from the body and the assimilation of nutrients. Lapachol is known to support the immune system, and it also has antifungal, antibacterial and antibiotic properties. It has been used to treat immune deficiency disorders, cardiovascular problems and high blood pressure. The USDA's Phytochemical Database identifies lapachol as having a broad spectrum of immunosupportive activity, inclduing being anticarcinomic, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antiabscess, antiseptic, antitumor, antiviral, bactericide, fungicide and viricide. Besides lapachol, Pau d'Arco contains at least 20 other active constituents. It has clearly demonstrated broad clinical applications against a large number of disease-causing micro-organisms, which explains its wide array of uses in herbal medicine. Its action seems to come from increasing oxygensupply at the local level, destroying bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Several clinical trials have shown Pau d'Arco to be effective against various disease-causing microbes and fungi, including tuberculosis, pneumonia, Candida, Trichophyton, Brucella, Staphylococcus, dysentery and strep. Pau d'Arco also has demonstrated antiviral, anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is helpful against Herpes, poliovirus, influenza, vesicular stomatitis, malaria, and many inflammatory infections. http://www.naturalhealthnotebook.com/Herbs/Latin_Herbs/Genus-T/Tabebuia_heptaphylla.htm:: High doses of lapachol, however, can cause uncontrolled bleeding, nausea, and vomiting. Warns the renowned herbalist Christopher Hobbs, August 20, 1995, via CompuServe: 'My observations concerning contraindications [of Pau d'Arco] are that the extract or tea can thin the blood and increase susceptibility of spontaneous bruising. I've observed it in the clinic, and am almost certain that it was related to a woman who drank the tea for many months.' Most authorities, including Hobbs, agree that Pau d'Arco is generally safe for appropriate consumption, but warn against overindulgence. Papaya Leaf Extract (Carica papaya) 2 fl oz: HH
Papaya leaf decoction is strongly astringent with an anti-parasitic and vermicidal action - that is, it is an antidote to Montezuma's Revenge. It can also be of profound use with chronic indigestion. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The juice of the tree or an infusion of the leaves and fruit makes the toughest meat tender when rubbed with it or cooked in the leaves; if chickens and pigs are fed on the leaves it will make their flesh tender.' 'The leaves are used as a substitute for soap... The fresh leaves have been used as a dressing for foul wounds...' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'The chief propertyof the milk of the carica is its action upon food, similar to that of pepsin, exercising, like this latter article, a digestive influence upon albuminoid substances. But the difficulty of procuring and preserving a sufficient amount of it for therapeutical use, together with its deeply irritating action, will prevent it from coming into use as a remedy for dyspepsia or gastric affections.' 'To overcome these obstacles, Dr. Mauriac instituted a series of experiments with the leaves of the tree, and found that a concentrated decoction of them exerted upon albuminoid substances an action analogous to that of the milky juice of the tree and of the green fruit, without any appreciable irritation of the gastric mucous membrane.' 'This decoction must be administered in small doses. Dr. Mauriac and others, however, prefer papain, the action of which does not appear to be interfered with by an acid or neutral condition of the stomach, and which, being more energetic than pepsin, must be given in smaller doses, and in aqueous solution. Papain has been used in atonic and fermentative dyspepsia, with painful acid eructations, flatulence, and constipation.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'Where papoid or any form of pawpaw is used as a digestive agent, there may be observed an increase in the amount of uric acid when that substance is deficient, and if oxalates are present they are diminished.' 'It is a reliable remedy for general distress or pain in the stomach and bowels during the process of digestion. It can be prescribed almost without discrimination in these cases, and the results are in some cases surprising. It may be given during the meal, and pain not occur for an hour. At that time, its influence being probably spent, another dose will continue the effects of the first. Its effects become permanent usually in acute or subacute cases after a few days, when it may be discontinued.' 'It is a most valuable agent in catarrh of the stomach and in the digestive failure accompanying continued fevers. It stimulates the stomach in the beginning of convalescence, and in some cases increases the appetite and promotes absorption of the digested pabulum.' 'It is serviceable in the digestive disorders of pregnancy, stimulating appropriation and assimilation. Saw Palmetto Berries (Serenoa repens) 100 capsules: K
Saw Palmetto Berries 600 mg per capsule. Saw Palmetto acts as a diuretic and urinary antiseptic, stimulates the appetite, inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone (a hormone that contributes to enlargement of prostate) and its good for poor appetite and prostate disorders. Nature's Herbs Premium Quality Saw Palmetto Berries grow in North America. Native to the Atlantic Coast, Native Americans have long consumed the fruit of this shrub for food and harvested honey from its flower. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Saw palmetto berry for 'Urination problems in benign prostatic hyperplasia stages I and II.' 'Daily dosage: 1 - 2 g saw palmetto berry or 320 mg lipophilic ingredients extracted with lipophilic solvents (hexane or ethanol 90 percent v/v); equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb and other galenical preparations for oral use. Actions: Antiandrogenic; Anti-exudative.' Benign prostate enlargement appears to be triggered by abnormally high levels of the male hormones testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in prostate tissue. Saw Palmetto reduces absorption of these hormones within the prostate gland, while reducing inflammation and swelling. This reduces bladder obstruction and improve urinary flow. Saw Palmetto prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydortestosterone, which helps to prevent the development of prostate disease and may also be beneficial for genitourinary problems, endocrine disorders, infertility, impotence, menstrual disorders, ovarian dysfunction, lactation, thyroid deficiencies, and painful menstrual periods. Saw palmetto does not appear to inhibit production of testosterone elsewhere in the body. At least three rigorous clinical trials have confirmed Saw Palmetto's ability to remedy urinary difficulties. In one comparative trial, it proved equal to the prescription drug Proscar (finasteride) as a source of symptomatic relief (although, unlike Proscar, it had no beneficial impact on the size of the prostate). Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Diuretic, sedative, tonic. It is milder and less stimulant than cubeb or copaiba, or even oil of sandalwood. Like these, it has the power of affecting the respiratory mucous membrane, and is used for many complaintswhich are accompanied by chronic catarrh.' 'It has been claimed that sabal is capable of increasing the nutrition of the testicles and mammae in functional atony of these organs. It probably acts by reducing catarrhal irritation and a relaxed condition of bladder and urethra. It is a tissue builder.' 'Dosages: Of fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm. Of solid extract, 5 to 15 grains.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Saw palmetto appears, from clinical reports, to be a nutritive tonic. It is also an expectorant, and controls irritation of mucous tissues. It has proved useful in irritative cough, chronic bronchial coughs, whooping-cough, laryngitis, acute Manufacturer: Nature's Herbs SKU: 31708 Category: Capsules, Extracts, I-Z-Male Support

St.John's Wort Herb C/S Cert. Organic (Hypericum perforatum) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infustion, tincture, extract and ointment. St. John's Wort was recommended by Hippocrates for 'nervous unrest.' It has a 2400-year recorded history of folk use for anxiety, sleep disturbances, and worry. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends St. John's Wort herb for 'Internal: Psychovegetative disturbances, depressive moods, anxiety and/or nervous unrest. Oily hypericum preparations for dyspeptic complaints. External: Oily hypericum preparations for treatment and post-therapy of acute and contused injuries, myalgia and first-degree burns.' 'Side Effects: Photosensitization is possible, especially in fair-skinned individuals.' 'Average daily dosage for internal use: 2 - 4 g of drug or 0.2 - 1 mg of total hypericin in other forms of drug application. Mode of Administration: Chopped herb, herb powder, liquid and solid preparations for internal use. Liquid and semi-solid preparations for external use. Preparations made with fatty oils for external and internal use.' 'Actions: A mild antidepressant action of the herb and its preparations has been observed and reported by numerous physicians.' The European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy (ESCOP) and the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia concur with the German Commission E. St. John's wort is official in the national pharmacopeias of Czechoslovakia, France, Poland, Romania, and Russia. St. John's Wort is now the number one antidepressant, natural or synthetic, prescribed by German physicians. Modern medical research has shown that Hypericum can be as effective as prescription antidepressants for mild to moderate depression. However, unlike prescription antidepressants, Hypericum's side effects are few and mild. In two clinical studies, Hypericum demonstrated anti-anxiety effects comparable to those of Valium (diazepam). Yet Hypericum is not addictive and does not impair cognitive functions. Hypericin, one of St. John's Wort's major active compounds, has been shown to increase levels of the neurotransmitter seratonin. Hypericin is also active against several viruses, including cytomegalovirus, human papillomavirus, hepatitis B, and herpes. St. John's Wort's sedative action is also pain relieving. It can be of significant help with sciatica, fibrositis and rheumatism. As the great naturopaths below indicate, St. John's Wort Flower Oil, combined with olive oil, can be used topically for back and nerve injury. Grieve’s classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Aromatic, astringent, resolvent, expectorant and nervine. Used in all pulmonary complaints, bladder troubles, in suppression of urine, dysentery, worms, diarrhoea, hysteria and nervous depression, haemoptysis and other haemorrhages and jaundice.' 'For children troubled with incontinence of urine at night an infusion or tea given before retiring will be found effectual; it is also useful Manufacturer: Starwest Botanicals SKU: 20429 Category: Bulk Herbs-Joint, Muscle & Bone
