Kantkari (Solanum Xantho-carpum) is one of the members of the dasamula (ten root) of the Ayurveda. It is a very spiny diffuse herb up to 1.2 m tall, commonly found throughout India. The juice of berries is used in sore throat. Roots and seeds are administered as an expectorant in asthma and cough and pain in chest. Stem flowers and fruits are bitter and carminative and are prescribed for relief in burning sensation in the feet. Leaves are applied locally to relieve pain. The drug is collected mainly from the wild plants, as there is no systematic cultivation of the herb. They are 3-5cm long and 1.6-6 mm thick, dull grayish in colour with a soft fibrous structure. It has a marked stimulating action on the digestive juices and on bile-flow and so will aid in debilitated states that are due to sluggish digestion, indigestion and problems of the liver and gall-bladder. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': Medicinal Action and Uses: Tonic, cathartic, deobstruent and febrifuge. An extract is made from the leaves, which possesses strong tonic properties, and which renders great service in rheumatism, scurvy, and skin diseases. An infusion of 1 oz. of the dried leaves to 1 pint of boiling water is taken in wineglassful doses, frequently repeated. It has also been recommended as an external application for dissolving glandular swellings. Finely powdered Buckbean leaves have been employed as a remedy for ague, being said to effect a cure when other means fail. In large doses, the powder is also purgative. It is used also as a herb tobacco. The juice of the fresh leaves has proved efficacious in dropsical cases, and mixed with whey has been known to cure gout. Buckbean tea, taken alone or mixed with wormwood, centaury or sage, is said to cure dyspepsia and a torpid liver. Preparation: Fluid extract, 10 to 40 drops. King's American Dispensatory, 1898: Buckbean, when recent, and given in large doses, usually causes emesis. It is, when dried, tonicand astringent, or purgative, according to the dose. It is valuable as a tonic where digestion and blood making are impaired, and particularly when there is an associated uterine disease or irregularity, or when following the use of quinine in malarial disorders (Scudder). For this purpose, a strong tincture of the fresh leaves may be given in doses of from 1 to 10 minims. It has been given in dyspepsia, intermittent and remittent fevers, with advantage; and has been highly recommended in chronic rheumatism, hepatalgia, dropsy, worms, and some cutaneous diseases, and as a tonic in scrofula, and various cachectic affections. As a tonic, the powdered root or herb may be given in doses of front 10 to 25 grains; of the aqueous extract, 5 or 10 grains; of the infusion (made by infusing 2 drachms of the herb or root in 4 fluid ounces of water at 212° F.), a fluid ounce or two; repeating the dose of either every 3 or 4 hours. The leaf extract has been used for treatment of bronchitis and asthma for many centuries. It relieves cough and breathlessness. The leaves of the plant contain the alkaloid vasicine (C11H12N2O), which is responsible for the small but persistent bronchodilatation, and an essential oil which is chiefly responsible for the expectorant action. The leaves and roots contain other alkaloids, vasicinone, vasicinolone and vasicol, which may contribute to the bronchodilatory effect through anticholinergic action on the vagal innervation of the bronchii. The bronchodilation effect is considerably increased after atropine administration. Studies have also shown vasa to be effective in the treatment of dyspepsia and pyorrhea . The in vitro growth of several strains of Mycoplasma tuberculosis was inhibited by the essential oil at concentrations in the range of2-20 ug/ml. There has also been a report of thrombopoetic (platelet-increasing) activity with vasicine. Traditional Uses: The juice expressed from the leaves and the decoction of the leaves and roots are useful in asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic coughs. Dried leaves are used in dhoomapana (smoking) in the treatment of bronchial asthma. The leaf decoction is an excellent expectorant when decocted with punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) and then combined with ginger juice and black pepper. Another effective preparation for the treatment of asthma is the decoction of vasa, guduci (Tinospora cordifolia), and kantakari (Solanum surratense) mixed with honey. Vasa has also been used to treat skin conditons by combining it with triphala and using the decoction both internally and externally. Vasa was also indicated in the treatment of internal hemmorhage; for this indication it was ususally decocted with haritaki, made into a ghrita, or taken alone as the leaf juice. Grieve's classic 'A Modern herbal': ' In India the flowers, leaves, root and specially the fruit are considered a valuable antispasmodic for asthma and intermittent fever; used with success also as an expectorant in cases of chronic bronchitis and phthisis; the leaves are dried and smoked as cigarettes to relieve asthma.' Anise is cultivated chiefly for its fruits, called aniseed, the flavor of which resembles licorice. Aniseed is widely used to flavor pastries; it is the characteristic ingredient of the popular German bread called Anisbrod. In the Mediterranean region and in Asia, aniseed is commonly used in meat and vegetable dishes. It makes a soothing herbal tea and has been used medicinally from prehistoric times. I remember first being introduced to sage as a teen one summer at a Yakima Indian pow wow. I enjoyed the drums, bells and rattles that accompanied its burning as well as its smoky scent. In Plains Native American sweat lodge ceremonies, the floor of the structure is strewn with sage leaves for the participants to rub on their bodies during the sweat. Wrap the thread around the bases of the sage stalks a number of times, and tie it in a knot at the bottom. Then proceed to wind the thread up the stick several times, around it, each pass about an inch or so apart from the next. Spiral the thread up and then back down the other side. Make sure to knot it at the end so it stays together. Perform this process a couple times until the wand seems reasonably stable. You don't want it falling apart all over the place when you're doing your ceremony. While you gather and wrap, make sure and focus your intention and visualize your purpose for the wand.
