Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The Mullein has very markedly demulcent, emollient and astringent properties, which render it useful in pectoral complaints. 'The dried leaves are sometimes smoked in an ordinary tobacco pipe to relieve the irritation of the respiratory mucus membranes, and will completely control, it is said, the hacking cough of consumption. Egyptian Blue Lotus is a sedative and aphrodisiac, rich in active resins. Organically grown and processed - pure dried leaf and flowers and nothing else. Makes a great smoke. Represented in ancient Egyptian art. The blue lotus was found scattered over Tutankhamen's body when the Pharaoh's tomb was opened in 1922. Many historians thought it was a purely symbolic flower, but there may be some reason to believe that ancient Egyptians used it to induce relaxation and an ecstatic state. When prepared as a tea the flowers produce a thick, gold/clear liquid that reminds one of melted amber. The liquid is ever-so-slightly sweet and upon being consumed creates a warm, euphoric glow. Contemporary research supports these ancient physicians, showing that the whole fruit is medicinally active. Vitex causes the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone. This increases progesterone production and helps regulate a woman's cycle, re-establishing the normal balance between estrogen and progesterone. The underproduction of progesterone can cause PMS and other related problems. This glandular balancing can be profoundly helpful during menopause. Vitex also keeps prolactin secretion in check. The ability to decrease mildly elevated prolactin levels may benefit some infertile women as well as some women with premenstrual syndrome. A glycogenolytic agent promotes the conversion of glycogen to burnable glucose. A lipolytic agent promotes the hydrolysis of fat. Maté is used for fatigue, nervous depression, rheumatic pains, psychogenic headache, and is specifically indicated for headache from fatigue. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia lists maté for psychogenic headache, fatigue, nervous depression, and rheumatic pains. In Germany, maté leaf is used as a component of prepared bladder and kidney teas, headache teas, and laxative teas. Maté dry extract is found as a component of instant teas and the alcoholic tincture is used in compound fluid preparations. In the United States, maté is used in monopreparations and as a component of central nervous system stimulant dietary supplements for mental and physical fatigue, aqueous infusion, alcoholic tincture, and aqueous dry extract.
