Its main uses were for impetigo, eczema and psoriasis. It is also helpful in liver-related constipation and biliousness. That is, it seems to help both skin and digestive problems by helping the liver and gall bladder with their detoxifying and fat-processing function. Used as a strong decoction, extract and tincture. Blue flag increases urination and bile production, and has a mild laxative effect. Blue flag formulations relieve pain of the liver and gall bladder, which may occur after excessive ingestion of fatty foods, alcohol or coffee. Absinthe is traditionally used as a tea, a strong decoction, a smoke or as an alcoholic extract, a tincture (liquer). The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends absinthe for 'Loss of appetite, dyspepsia, biliary dyskinesia. Daily dosage: 2 - 3 g of herb as water infusion. Mode of Administration: Cut herb for infusions and decoctions, herb powder, also extracts and tinctures as liquid or solid forms of medication for oral administration.' Yes, absinthe is an inebriating pipeful - its psychoactive thujones seem to bind to the same receptor as THC. Several species of Artemisia are also smoked for visionary effect by some Indian tribes. Edgar Allen Poe loved it, and lookit what he did. A user writes: 'The effect was extremely pleasant, although I would not list absinthe as a psychedelic. It definitely belongs in terms of subjective effects to the solvent/nitrous oxide category, although pharmacologically very different. The following day I felt very lethargic, but it is hard to say if it was due to the absinthe since we stayed up pretty late that night. My conclusion: I give it two thumbs up, but would not drink it more than occasionally since it is reported as neurotoxic.' Although the oil destroys various types of worms, long-term use, due to the mildly toxic thujones, is not recommended. Medicinal Action and Uses: Tonic, stomachic, febrifuge, anthelmintic. 'A nervine tonic, particularly helpful against the falling sickness and for flatulence. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. Another variety, White melilot (M. alba), a similar but taller, white-flowered species, has the same medicinal uses. Coumarins in both of these clovers may decrease blood clotting. Used externally in a salve or as a poultice for swellings, boils, and similar skin problems, old sores, wounds, swellings, milk knots, arthritis, rheumatism. The decoction used as a wash for wounds, aching muscles, convulsions, varicose veins, anti-inflammatory, eyewash. Internally it is used for colic, stomach problems, gas, diarrhea, painful menstruation, smoked for asthma, and headaches and chronic bronchitis. Used as a tea, this herb is helpful where there is weakness of tone of the penis and partial impotence. A concentrated preparation made from the plant is sometimes prescribed by doctors as an anti-coagulant to break up blood clots. Components of this herb may lower blood pressure but care should be taken, it also lowers blood clotting. Do not use with warfarin or other blood-thinning drugs, or with any blood-clotting problem. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': Parts Used Medicinally: The whole herb is used, dried, for medicinal purposes, the flowering shoots, gathered in May, separated from the main stem and dried in the same manner as Broom tops. Applied as a plaster, or in ointment, or as a fomentation, it is an old-fashioned country remedy for the relief of abdominal and rheumatic pains. It relieves flatulence and in modern herbal practice is taken internally for this purpose. The flowers, besides being very useful and attractive to bees, have supplied a perfume, and a water distilled from them has been used for flavouring. A liquid extract is prepared from the bark, administered in India for its astringent properties in doses of 1/2 to 1 fluid, but the use of both gum and bark for industrial purposes is much larger than their use in medicine. The secret is in its ability to chelate the minerals in your water and plant food and reduce harmful chlorine. This keeps minerals from combining with other minerals and dropping out of solution. Plants cannot feed on the minerals unless the minerals are in solution, so keeping them in solution is very important. This is very important in hydroponics. Keeping minerals in solution when passing through electromagnetic fields such as pumps may also create a problem. The water conditioner will help here too. The Water Conditioner will also help keep the soil from becoming toxic. It adds important amino acids your plants are looking for but seldom fould in hydroponic plant food. Now that I’m thinking of it let me make an important note: If you are growing in soil, you must allow at least 25% of the water or plant food that you are feeding the plant with to exit the pot and not allowed to touch the pot or its soil ever again. Do not capture this run off and feed it back to the plant. Do not water or feed the potted plant from the bottom. (An occasional bottom watering to help saturate the soil if the soil dries completely out is OK) Try not feed the plants plant food every watering. Water the plants in-between feedings. Use the Water Conditioner. This will help to keep the plant food from building up in the pot and making the soil toxic. Plants roots feed by the process called osmosis. This is where the juices inside the roots bring in minerals and other soluble compounds into the plant through the root skin or membranes. This happens because the juices in the roots have more soluble minerals in them than those that are soluble in the soil. If the soil has more minerals in it than the roots, the plants osmotic process will be disrupted and the plant cannot feed. This problem can be traced to 50% of our customers plant health complaints. Toxic mediasymptoms would include: Curling of leaves, leaves that will crumble when grasped as if they were under watered, signs of nutrient deficiency when plenty of nutrients have been made available and plants that will not thrive or grow as expected. Herbal extracts are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilated into the system. Milk thistle is believed to protect the cells of the liver by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping to remove these toxins from the liver cells. Milk thistle seeds contain a bioflavonoid complex known as silymarin. As with other bioflavonoids, silymarin is a powerful antioxidant. Milk thistle also regenerates injured liver cells. Milk thistle extract is most commonly recommended to counteract the harmful actions of alcohol on the liver. Long-term placebo-controlled, double blind studies have shown milk thistle extracts to be effective in patients with liver cirrhosis, chronichepatitis, and even diabetes due to cirrhosis. Milk thistle alters bile makeup, thereby potentially reducing risk of gallstones. Since silymarin is not very soluble in water, a strong boiled decoction of the ground seeds is most effective, rather than a weak infusion (tea). More effective yet is the standardized extract. A recent case report of chronic infection by hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus demonstrated potential efficacy of treatment with milk thistle (10 g ground-up seeds in oatmeal with standardized (70%) milk thistle extract capsules three times daily) in combination with another herb known for its hepatoprotectant activity, Phyllanthus amarus (200 mg, three times daily). What would eggnog be without the nutmeg?It is mildly hallucinogenic, which may also contribute to the Christmas cheer. Nutmeg is also used in perfumes and ointments. The brown, wrinkled, apricot-like fruit contains a kernel which is covered by a bright red membrane. The membrane (arillus) provides the spice mace, and the kernel the spice nutmeg. Traditional Middle Eastern, Indian and North African spice mixtures, used for everything from meats to pastries, such as baharat, garam masala and ras el hanout, often contain nutmeg. In Holland, nutmeg is used for just about everything, literally from soup to nuts, and everything in between. French quatre épices ('four spices') contains nutmeg, ginger, white pepper and cloves. Allspice and cinnamon are sometimes added. Four spice mix finds its way into stews, ragouts, sausages and pastries. Jamaica's great jerk grilled meat seasoning often contains nutmeg. 'Dose of nutmeg or mace, from 5 to 20 grains. Larger doses possess decided narcotic qualities, and in doses of 2 or 3 drachms, dangerous symptoms have been produced.' Eclectic Materia Medica, 1922 (Felter): 'An aromatic stimulant and carminative in small doses; larger doses produce nervous sedation and are soporific... Therapy: External. An ointment containing the finely powdered nut, or the volatile oil sometimes proves obtundant to painful piles.
