Feverfew is recommended in modern European herbal medicine,as in ancient Greek herbal medicine, as a preventative of migraine headaches. It an effective anti-inflammatory, vasodilator and emmenagogue. It contains a range of compounds known as sesquiterpene lactones, 85% of which are a compound called parthenolide. Parthenolide helps prevent excessive clumping of platelets and inhibits the release of certain chemicals, including serotonin and some inflammatory mediators. According to several double blind studies with migraine patients, feverfew reduces the severity, duration, and frequency of migraine headaches. A decoction with sugar or honey is said to be good for coughs, wheezing and difficult breathing.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Tonic, carminative, emmenagogue, vermifuge, and stimulant. This agent is one of the pleasantest of the tonics, influencing the whole intestinal tract, increasing the appetite, improving digestion, and promoting secretion, besides having a decided action upon the renal and cutaneous functions.' 'The warm infusion is an excellent remedy in recent colds, flatulency, worms, atonic dyspepsia, irregular menstruation, nervous debility, hysteria, suppression of the urine, and in some febrile diseases.' 'In hysteria or flatulency, 1 teaspoonful of the compound spirits of lavender forms a valuable addition to the dose of the infusion, which is from 2 to 4 fluid ounces. Throughout medieval Europe, pepper was commonly traded, ounce for ounce, for gold. This irreplaceable spice has long been recognized as an ingredient for stimulating the appetite. Peppercorns can be, depending on their processing, either black, white, green and red. That is, the same plant produces all four types, depending on the time of harvest and the method of processing. 'Black pepper' is harvested nearly ripe and dried at a moderate temprature. 'White pepper' is harvested fully ripe, so that the outer hull can be easily removed, usually by soaking. This produces an equally strong, but less flavorful pepper. 'Green pepper' is harvested unripe, and then either pickled in salt or vinegar, or quick-dried. This produces a less pungent, more herbal flavor. 'Red pepper' is harvested ripe, and then pickled in salt or vinegar. This produces a very pungent, aromatic and tasty pepper that, since the pickling stopped the natural fermentation, still retains some of the more herbal flavor of the green variety. This is probably the most widely used spice in the world. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Aromatic, stimulant, carminative; is said to possess febrifuge properties.... As a gargle it is valued for relaxed uvula, paralysis of the tongue. On account of its stimulant action it aids digestion and is specially useful in atonic dyspepsia and torbid condition of the stomach. It will correct flatulence and nausea. It has also been used in vertigo, paralytic and arthritic disorders. It is sometimes added to quinine when the stomach will not respond to quinine alone. It has also been advised in diarrhoea, cholera, scarlatina, and in solution for a wash for tinea capititis. Piperine should not be combined with astringents, as it renders them inert.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Black pepper is a gastro-intestinal stimulant, and is much used as a condiment to improve the flavor of food, and to favor its digestion by stimulating the stomach. It has been advantageously used as a carminative to remove flatulency, and to correct the nauseating or griping quality of other drugs, and is sometimes added to quinine in cases where the stomach, from torpidity or other cause, is not acted upon by the quinine alone. 'As a gastric stimulant it is very valuable in congestive chill, cholera morbus, and associated with hydrastis, nux vomica, or other stomachic bitters is effectual in atonic dyspepsia. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Jasmine Tea is a famous tea made from Green or Pouchong (Chinese Green) tea leaves that are scented with layered jasmine flowers during the curing process. After the tea leaves have absorbed the fragrance, the flowers are removed, then the scenting process is repeated to produce a tea that has a fresh and natural bouquet. It is recognized along with green tea, oolong tea and black tea as one of the four major tea types. Green tea should be steeped in very hot, but not boiling, water. Boiling water will scorch the delicate flavor, rendering it bitter. Green tea comes mainly from China, Japan, Taiwan and, to a lesser degree, India. The critical difference between green and black tea is that green tea leaves are not allowed to ferment. Green tea is, instead, steamed, rolled and fired. Green tea is the natural dried leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Black tea is oxidized green tea. The phrase 'Black Tea' is also used as a generic name for all Camelia sinensis teas. The major Black Tea types, from the traditional black tea evergeen (Camellia sinensis), classified according to processing method, include: fermented, or black, tea, producing an amber-coloured, full-flavoured beverage without bitterness; semi-fermented, or oolong, producing a slightly bitter, light brownish-green liquid; and unfermented, or green, tea, resulting in a mild, slightly bitter, pale greenish-yellow beverage. Caffeine is responsible for tea's stimulating effect. Flavor is produced by volatile oils, and astringency and color by tannin. Black teas are classified by geographical origin and the size of the processed leaf. Traditional operations result in larger leafy grades and smaller broken grades. The leafy grades are flowery pekoe (FP), orange pekoe (OP), pekoe (P), pekoe souchong (PS), and souchong (S). Green tea is bioflavonoid-rich, proven useful for fighting free radical damage in the human body. It has a high content of polyphenols, which are a class of bioflavonoids. Green tea's best studied polyphenol is Epigallocatechin Gallate. Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), protects against digestive and respiratory infections.
