This is Frontier''s nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Large chunks of the whole peel are best for inclusion in teas and herbal concoctions. They are easily strained out of teas and the large pieces preserve more of the flavor-giving essential oils. The powder, obviously, can be dissolved in mixes and stews. Lemon peel works well goes well in dishes prepared with lemon juice, for example fish soups or fish stews. Some Central European meat-and-grain stews may also call for a little bit of grated lemon peel. When lemon peel is grated, care must be taken to limit the amount of the white albedo (mesocarp), as the essential oil and hence the aroma is located in the outer thin yellow pericarp exclusively; in contrast, the mesocarp is bitter. It is virtually impossible to avoid the bitter mesocarp completely, and so grated lemon peel will always display a slightly bitter quality. This bitterness makes lemon peel inappropriate for delicate dishes and sweets; in these cases, lemon essence or candied citron are far superior. Candied Lemon Peel: Put peel in saucepan and cover with water. Bring to boil, drain and rinse briefly under cold water. Blanch in same manner 2 more times. After third blanching, drain peels, rinse under cold water and, using thin sharp knife, remove as much pith as possible. You should be able to see some color through any remaining pith. Cut in shreds about 1/8 to ¼ inch wide. While peels are being blanched, combine 4 cupssugar and 4 cups water in large saucepan. Bring to boil and stir to combine. Cook, without stirring, over medium heat until mixture makes thin syrup, about 1 hour. You will have about 4 cups syrup. Cover triple-blanched peel with cold water and bring to simmer. Cook until peel begins to lose raw look, 5 to 10 minutes. Drain and immediately, without rinsing peel, transfer to large mixing bowl. Cover with hot sugar syrup and set aside 1 hour to candy. After fruit has candied, place about 1 cup sugar in bottom of another large mixing bowl. Add peel and toss to coat well. Shaking to remove excess sugar, transfer peel to cooling rack set over jellyroll pan to catch dripping sugar. Arrange in layer as thin as possible. Place rack and jellyroll pan in warm oven for 30 minutes to dry. Remove from oven and leave at room temperature to finish drying. Peel will continue to become firmer and chewier over several days. When peel reaches desired texture, store in airtight container until ready to use. Use powdered lemon peel in place of extract in baking; also in toppings, to flavor sugar-bowl sugar and to flavor honey, duck, and barbecue sauces. During the fall in the Uji district, traditional center of the Japanese tea industry, Japanese tea farmers turn to the harvest of tea twigs for Kukicha, the 'peasant's drink', so-called because farmers drank it after selling the leaves to sophisticated urbanites as a cash crop. They carefully select 40% medium 3-yr, 40% thick 10-yr, and 20% thin twigs and leaves aged 1 year, before gently roasting each variety separately to bring out its rich flavor. Because caffeine is concentrated in the leaves, twig tea is low in caffeine and can be drunk even at night. The major Black Tea types, from the traditional black tea evergeen (Camellia sinensis), classified according to processing method, include: fermented, or black, tea, producing an amber-coloured, full-flavoured beverage without bitterness; semi-fermented, or oolong, producing a slightly bitter, light brownish-green liquid; and unfermented, or green, tea, resulting in a mild, slightly bitter, pale greenish-yellow beverage. Tea contains only four calories per cup when consumed without added ingredients but is a source of several B-complex vitamins, including B2 and nicotinic acid. Caffeine is responsible for tea's stimulating effect. Flavour is produced by volatile oils, and astringency and colour by tannin. Psyllium is an unusually effective and safe laxative, high in both fiber and mucilage. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Psyllium, both the seed and husk of Plantago ovata, for 'Chronic constipation; disorders whereby easy bowel movements with a loose stool are desirable, e.g., in patients with anal fissures, hemorrhoids, following anal/rectal surgery; during pregnancy; as a secondary medication in the treatment of various kinds of diarrhea and in the treatment of irritable bowel.' 'Contraindications: Stenosis of the gastrointestinaltract. Obstruction or threatening obstruction of the bowel (ileus). Poorly controllable diabetes mellitus. Side Effects: In rare cases allergic reactions may occur. Interactions with Other Drugs: The intestinal absorption of other medication taken simultaneously may be delayed. Warning: There may need to be a reduction in the insulin dosage in diabetics who are insulin-dependent.' 'Daily dose: 4 - 20 g of the drug prepared accordingly. Mode of Administration: The whole drug as well as other galenical preparations to be taken orally. Note: Sufficient fluids must be taken with the drug, e.g., 150 ml water to 5 g drug. The British Pharmaceutical Codex, 1911: 'Ispaghula is official in India and the Eastern Colonies, where it is used as an equivalent of linseed or barley, and the seeds are much used in the East in dysentery and diarrhoea. The decoction is employed as a cooling demulcent drink, or the seeds are mixed with a little sugar and taken dry. In this form they take up water in the intestinal canal, the resulting mucilage acting as a protection to the inflamed mucous membranes. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Throughout medieval Europe, pepper was commonly traded, ounce for ounce, for gold. This irreplaceable spice has long been recognized as an ingredient for stimulating the appetite. Peppercorns can be, depending on their processing, either black, white, green and red. That is, the same plant produces all four types, depending on the time of harvest and the method of processing. 'Black pepper' is harvested nearly ripe and dried at a moderate temprature. 'White pepper' is harvested fully ripe, so that the outer hull can be easily removed, usually by soaking. This produces an equally strong, but less flavorful pepper. 'Green pepper' is harvested unripe, and then either pickled in salt or vinegar, or quick-dried. This produces a less pungent, more herbal flavor. 'Red pepper' is harvested ripe, and then pickled in salt or vinegar. This produces a very pungent, aromatic and tasty pepper that, since the pickling stopped the natural fermentation, still retains some of the more herbal flavor of the green variety. This is probably the most widely used spice in the world. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal':'Aromatic, stimulant, carminative; is said to possess febrifuge properties.... As a gargle it is valued for relaxed uvula, paralysis of the tongue. On account of its stimulant action it aids digestion and is specially useful in atonic dyspepsia and torbid condition of the stomach. It will correct flatulence and nausea. It has also been used in vertigo, paralytic and arthritic disorders. It is sometimes added to quinine when the stomach will not respond to quinine alone. It has also been advised in diarrhoea, cholera, scarlatina, and in solution for a wash for tinea capititis. Piperine should not be combined with astringents, as it renders them inert.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Black pepper is a gastro-intestinal stimulant, and is much used as a condiment to improve the flavor of food, and to favor its digestion by stimulating the stomach. It has been advantageously used as a carminative to remove flatulency, and to correct the nauseating or griping quality of other drugs, and is sometimes added to quinine in cases where the stomach, from torpidity or other cause, is not acted upon by the quinine alone. 'As a gastric stimulant it is very valuable in congestive chill, cholera morbus, and associated with hydrastis, nux vomica, or other stomachic bitters is effectual in atonic dyspepsia. A plant of the family of grasses, and genusBambusa, growing in tropical countries. The most useful species is Bambusa arundinacea, which has a woody, hollow, round, straight, jointed stem, and grows to the height of forty feet and upward. The flowers grow in large panicles, from the joints of the stalk, placed three in a parcel, close to their receptacles. Old stalks grow to five or six inches in diameter, and are so hard and durable as to be used for building, and for all sorts of furniture, for water pipes, and for poles to support palanquins. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': The leaves, bark, flowers and kernels have medicinal virtue. Both the leaves and bark are still employed for their curative powers. They have demulcent, sedative, diuretic and expectorant action. An infusion of 1/2 oz. of the bark or 1 oz. of the dried leaves to a pint of boiling water has been found almost a specific for irritation and congestion of the gastric surfaces. It is also used in whooping cough, ordinary coughs and chronic bronchitis, the dose being from a teaspoonful to a wineglassful as required. King's American Dispensatory. by Harvey Wickes Felter, M.D., and John Uri Lloyd, Phr. M., Ph. D., 1898. Peach leaves ininfusion have been recommended in morbid irritability of the bladder and urethra, pertussis, ischuria, hematuria, and nausea, as well as in all inflammations of the stomach and abdomen. They act as a sedative in doses of a tablespoonful every hour or two, of the cold infusion; in larger doses they slightly act upon the bowels, and are said to have been useful in removing worms.
