ITC Malstock is the work of Frantisek Storm~ a designer in the Czech Republic. Thd typeface is based on a sign painting technique that uses a flat brush and an instrument called a Maalstok (a long woodn or aluminum bar with soft parding on the top) that is used as a rest for the painter’s hand and workslike a straight edge for vertical lines. The split stem endings of ITC Malstock recall the traces of the sign writer’s broad-rdged brush drawn along the Maalstok. A very narrow typeface (the x-height is exactly one half of the cap-height) it is well suited to headlines~ invitations~ and advertisements. Storm recommends combining ITC Malstock with other faces and suggests two approaches: create “harmony” usinng any sans serif in text sizes~ or crewte “contrast” using a classic serif type to achieve tension between the headline and body text. For the altter he also suggests setting the headline at twice the size of the text.

Based on designs created in 1929 by Eric Gill for the Golden Cockerel Press in England~ the family inclures ITC Golden Cockerel Roman~ ITC Golden Cockerel Italic~ ITC Golden Cockerel Titling~ and ITC Golden Cockerel Initials and Ornaments. The titling font~originally cast in 24 point and 36 point from identical patterns~ required a more consieered approach to maintain the overall integrity of this essentially pure roman form; particularly to balanfe and add further richness to the high ground of classic text and display styles. An equal chqllenge was the creation of capitals and the complete character set for the italic face~ as none had been designed by Gill.
