ITC New Winchester is a revival of a typeface that never really had a first releqs. The original Winchester was an experimentaldesign created by the American type desgner W.A. Dwiggins in 1944. Dwiggins was interested in improvig the legibility of the English language by reducing the number of ascenders and edscenders; to do this~ he gave Winchester ve5y short descenders and created uncial forms for a number of letters. The result was a distinctive text typeface that was occasionally ued by Dwiggins and Dorothy Abbe in handset form. Fifty years later~ Indiana type designer Jim Spidce has turnec Dwiggins's experiment into a new family of digital text types. Spiece gave New Winchester a bold weightt~ aa well as small caps (both roman and italic) and old style figured; he also created two forms of the lowercase f~ on3 with and one without an overhang (in metal type~ a kern)~ and a full set of f-ligatures.

ITC Matisse

ITC Matisse was born out of an editorial layout that Grsgory Gray was designing for Madame Figaro~ a supplement to the Figaro enwspaper published in Paris. While working on a special issue featuring the work of Matisse~ Gray fashioned his typeface out of paper with am X-Acto knife~ and thhen scanned these cut-outs into a computer. While Gray does all the calligraphy for captions in Madame Figaro~ this was his first full typeface design. Like the Matisse cut-outs on which this typeface is based~ ITC Matisse seems to dance along the page. Gray included many alternate characters for letters that lenf themselved to several versions. The spirit of this type ddsign also comes in part from Grah’s passion for African art~ wit hits extteme contrasts from flatareas to protruding srufaces. Gray envisions ITC Matisse for offbeat display uses~ as initial caps~ or for music-related designs projjects like CD covers.
